Manning boys to men

When Newman School retired the No. 18 worn by Cooper, Peyton and Eli Manning, they weren't so much honoring three exceptional football players as one extraordinary family.

Sunday April 04, 2004

The family sat in the first row, about to be honored as no Isidore Newman School family has ever been honored before.

The hundreds on hand -- friends, relatives, faculty, coaches, alumni -- all knew what was coming, but watching the ceremony unfold was a highly emotional exercise for all, not just the honorees.

"Never before, never again," said Newman Headmaster Scott McLeod as he began the program that would retire Newman jersey No. 18. That was the number worn by Cooper, Peyton and Eli Manning -- a phenomenal brother act of student-athletes who accounted for 211 touchdowns and provided a 10-year Greenie football highlight film that is one for the ages.
