The New Orleans Saints have some tough decisions to make in the coming week about which veteran players they can afford to keep -- and which ones they have to let go. Such is the nature of being an elite NFL team. They can afford to keep the core together only for so long. Just look at the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have released three Pro Bowl players this offseason.
The Saints' situation isn't that dire yet. They were an estimated $7 million under the projected salary cap of $120 million at the start of this week, including a charge of about $14.4 million for placing the franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees. That doesn't leave much room to re-sign all of their key free agents -- a list that includes guard Carl Nicks, receivers Marques Colston and Robert Meachem and cornerback Tracy Porter. The Saints will try to bring back all of those players, but they can't afford to win many bidding wars on the open market. As they've always done, the Saints will place a value on what they feel each player is worth and stick to that number. Full article. Great read.
We got problems, but we also have multiple solutions. I'm pretty sure the 1st casualty will be not resigning Colston. Everyone needs to read this article. |

Restructuring Evans would be a great idea but will he go for it? |

Outside of an article I read today saying Colston was a risky signing because of injuries and age everyone seems to think he is gone.

I doubt it and his cap hit is "only" $4.7M this coming season, so there's not that much to be saved this season by restructuring. I'd be in favor of extending/restructuring Greer's contract like was suggested by someone in the comments. And I'm not sure how on point Triplett is with some of those figures, because I've seen conflicting numbers from other reputable sources, but I think he must have fairly good sources himself. |
