Also, he was usually hit from guys rushing off the edge, not up the middle where Grubbs was.

FinSaint 03-14-2012 01:57 PM

They'll sign him. How do I know you ask...?

I know it's true because Mike D is Bulimic!

I guess another way to go would be to take a look at Eric Winston, the RT the Texans released on Monday. He failed their medical, but he underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery in February and according to his statements he should pass medicals in two weeks time. He hasn't missed a start in the past 5 seasons.

He was part of that strong O-line of the Texans, and he would be an upgrade over Strief (and Bushrod), at least in my opinion - Strief would be free to move to LG.

Eric Winston, T for the Houston Texans at NFL.com

I don't know if iv'e ever seen a six foot, eight inch guard.

Not saying he can't, I really like the guy. SUPER nice to my son on many occasions.

He could do a disappearing act with Sproles. :-)

Great signing, watch the offense not even miss a beat next season

darstep 03-15-2012 09:50 AM

I don't think they would have missed a beat either way.
Grubbs is a nice signiture.

HouYat 03-15-2012 09:55 AM

NFL.com Blogs » Blog Archive Saints, OL Grubbs agree on 5-year, $36M deal «

This proves it was all about the money for Nicks, which is cool we aren't going quietly!!! Way to get up off the mat!!! This was the respectable deal he was speaking of!!!

lee909 03-15-2012 10:13 AM

He has big shoes to fill.Nice to see us go out and get things sorted quickly.

papz 03-15-2012 10:31 AM

Saints signed OG Ben Grubbs, formerly of the Ravens, to a five-year, $36 million deal.

The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus, and $16 million "fully guaranteed." Grubbs provides the Saints a soft landing after they lost LG Carl Nicks to the Bucs, but at a surprisingly steep cost. Grubbs landed just $11.5 million less total money, and will average roughly $2 million less per season. Grubbs graded out as Pro Football Focus' sixth-best left guard in 2011, but Nicks was significantly better in both run and pass blocking. Nicks is also more than a year younger. The Ravens will likely now focus on signing free agent Evan Mathis to replace Grubbs.

Great job Saints.

Luda34 03-15-2012 10:41 AM

That's good we got next best thing but cheaper

Pete 03-15-2012 10:45 AM

Hell yeah I'll take it!

FinSaint 03-15-2012 11:25 AM

That is some great news, but the price was more than I thought they'd offer him.

I guessed his price to be about $6M/year and this deal gives him an average of about $7.2M/year, which is still $2.3M/year less than Nicks, but maybe a slight overpayment?!

I wonder what the Ravens' initial offer was?

frydaddy 03-15-2012 11:29 AM

Nice, very nice. Offensive side of the ball is good to go (well, with the exception of a long term deal for brees) now let's bolster that d!

Is it just me or does all the bounty bs seem like its not nearly as big a deal as it was a few days ago?

Pete 03-15-2012 11:29 AM

Danno pretty much pegged his pay.Props D:bng:

leilung 03-15-2012 11:31 AM

Nicks - 8 million/yr
Grubbs - 5 million/year

Ravens gave Yanda, their RG a contract last year which pays him an average of $6.5M/year, so I think that is close to what the Ravens offered Grubbs as well - the Saints might've offered him "only" $700k/year more, but it seems to have been enough.

Maybe Nicks' $9.5M/year contract had an effect on Grubbs' contract as well.

Yeah, I think we overpaid a little for Grubbs, but to have a guy that WANTS to be here (as opposed to playing under the tag) and who costs us $2mm/year less that what it probably would have cost to keep Nicks?

Yeah, I think that's a good deal as long as we use that $$$ to sign Drew and a linebacker or so...

FinSaint 03-15-2012 12:05 PM

Well, at least they now have the two guards locked in through to 2017.

NOS2SB 03-15-2012 12:14 PM

If we can't have #1 we mind as well have #2.

Like Doo-Doo #2?
or are you making fun of my brother?

LivnaLieTimay 03-15-2012 02:56 PM

Glad to have Grubbs on board but I think we may have overpaid a little. I would of thought his salary was going to be about $1 million less per year than what we gave him (I thought around $6 million a year was the right price). However, it's good to know that we have 2 solid guards locked up for the next 5 years. Now let's get Drew a long term deal and shore up the defense.

iceshack149 03-15-2012 03:05 PM

I hope he stays off twitter. It looks like some Saints "fans" said some crappy things about Carl Nicks. Maybe Grubbs has thicker skin.

ChrisXVI 03-15-2012 04:48 PM

Welcome to the Gulf Coast Ben!! I'm thrilled to have you on board! Now let this be the end of the Nicks talk... It's time to turn the page and begin the Ben Grubbs era!

Byubengal 03-15-2012 05:13 PM

Carl who?

Even though Nicks got annoyed on twitter, my opinion is that there's no call for this kind of talk. While for us fans who live and die Saints football, Nicks' leaving looks like a selfish defection, football is in fact a job and a business for the players. Nicks will likely only get 3 contracts in his career, and this second one is the one that's going to pay all the bills for him. He has an obligation to look out for himself and his family, just as the Saints are obligated to look at for the team as a whole.

Who among us would actually pass up a job paying 3 times the salary just to say in our current job out of a sense of loyalty? I'd be out the door so fast, the door would spin for a week.

All I'm saying there's no hard feelings to Nicks on my part and I wish him well...

Except when he's playing the Saints.
