I've been thinking about this a lot and here's the thing: even if Drew has invested wisely and has plenty of money for he and all his grandkids to retire, I still don't see why he shouldn't do everything he can to get as much money as he can.
I mean, I COULD live on $15,000/year up here in NY. I'd have to live in a studio apartment with 4 other guys and eat pb&j and ramen noodles for every meal but I could do it. But why should I if I don't have to? I'm not saying Drew is going to have to eat PB&J and Ramen, I'm just saying why should he work for a salary that is not representative of his value to the organization? Or at least TRY to get a salary that represents his value? Of course he would be fine if he took the "lower" salary that has been offered to him but you know what? The saints organization isn't exactly going to go bankrupt by paying him the extra $5mil. he wants. I know there are salary cap issues but, come on...we all know that the cap numbers can be easily manipulated to make contracts work. When you go to a car dealer do you just say "oh, the sticker price is $38,000? Yeah, that sounds about right...where do I sign?" Of course not. Give the guy time to try to get his money. If it gets to the point where he's holding out from OTAs or games and his contract negotiation starts to hurt the team then get mad...I'll be right there with you... |
