FA Jo-Lonn Dunbar mulling options
I just checked in with free agent New Orleans Saints linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar, who said he has received interest from a "few teams" but hasn't made any decisions yet. Dunbar said the Saints are "absolutely" still in the mix.
"I've got a few teams interested, but I'm still trying to figure out my best option," said Dunbar, who said he may make his first visit early next week but didn't specify where. Full article. I'm beginning to think more and more that Dunbar simply doesn't fit into what Spags is looking for in a MLB and that is why he might be playing elsewhere next season.
Don't get me wrong, even though I haven't jumped on the wagon with many of you guys who've been really high on Dunbar, I'd still like to see him being re-signed by the Saints. But, only if he truly fits the schemes, if he comes cheap, and if he is a depth guy - not a day-1 starter. Also, I'm really hopeful that Jeremiha Hunter will emerge as at least a 2nd tier WLB in the camps - maybe Spags could even groom him to be a future MLB 'cos his college career seems to suggest that he is not only a solid tackler/run stopper, but also above average in pass coverage. |
He's going to draw a fair amount of interest after last season. He earned a pay increase.

I think Jo Lon did enough last year. He did step up when needed. I'd to see him stay. Hope he does.

I hope he stays! IMO he has done really well for our team!

I just wonder if Spags wants him back. |
Vet minimum, he's a great back-up MLB and a solid special teamer.
I hope we keep him. |
Dunbar was damn good last season. I don't care if he fits Spagnuolo's scheme... How about Spag's adjusts his scheme for a player that replaced our best linebacker last season with no obvious drop-off.

He replaced a guy who was playing at 80% "with no obvious drop-off" - in my mind that does not equate a starter. I don't think Spags has to adjust to anything, especially not in a situation where the player in question is not under contract. Spags was brought in to implement his schemes and I for one would give him all the possible (under the current circumstances) tools to do it, and not handcuff him into using certain players just because they played well in the past. Again I'm a Saints' fan first and foremost, not a fan of individual players. |

Those guys will be dirt cheap, which is kinda what we're stuck with. |

Ok. You're certainly entitled to that opinion, but I have to disagree with you on it. Vilma's current or future health and the level at which he can perform is hardly an issue we have to include in the though process of evaluating whether Dunbar should stay or go. Granted he did a fine job as a replacement last season, but my point about it was that he wasn't replacing a player who was playing at the level at which he can at his best - if he had been, the difference would've been clear and not so much in favor of Dunbar. Like Danno stated, Spags can probably find players that better suit his particular schemes and what those schemes require from players at certain positions fairly cheap at the end of the FA period. Now those players might not be his 1st or 2nd choices, but he'll have to make due with those players because of the cap situation the Saints are in, and that is exactly what I would like to see the Saints do. |
