this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Saints sign DT Brodrick Bunkley (5 years, $25M; $9M guaranteed): B Grade The timing of this signing is pretty weird, isn't it? I guess Brodrick Bunkley doesn't care about not having a head coach for the first season of his ...

The signing of Bunkley was really important, and while it can be argued that the Saints over-payed him somewhat, it wasn't by very much since both Franklin and Rogers made $4M last season.
Bunkley still has quite a few years left in him, and he might just find his true potential in the black & gold under Spags' tutelage, in which case this grade could easily go up to an A. I just wonder if Bunkley would've signed this particular deal if he would've known the whole extent of the BountyGate penalties, including the potential suspensions to the defensive players? It'll be curious to see what the structure of the contract is, whenever it'll be made public knowledge. |

I still want to know when and where did the NFL confirm the intent of the players was to permanantly injure any player.

as far as i know they only players mentioned are all rumor based at this point.
Not a bad signing in my book. money is fair and very cap friendly The deal averages $4.5 million a season and includes a $4.5 million signing bonus. But the structure is very cap friendly in the first year. Bunkley’s cap figure for 2012 is only $1.6 million. That’s good news for a team that had only about $3 million in available cap space before Bunkley’s deal and is still working to get quarterback Drew Brees signed to a long-term contract. Bunkley helped the Saints out by accepting a base salary of $700,000 this year and spreading out large chunks of money over the rest of the contract. In 2013, Bunkley has a $3.7 million base salary that’s fully guaranteed. In 2014, Bunkley’s salary jumps to $4.4 million and it stays there for the final two years of the deal. Bunkley also has a $100,000 workout bonus each year, starting in 2013. He also has escalator clauses that could drive up his base salary in any season, starting next year. Bunkley deal cap-friendly for Saints - NFC South Blog - ESPN A bit over hyped in the 2006 draft due to his combine performance. so Phili stupidity in the draft and denver not getting the deal done for some strange reason we benefit. We get a big, strong and athletic DT that still has years of playing time ahead of him if the knees hold up. yep a bit of early knee troubles in high school and early on in college. I wanted him till the combine hype drove his stock out of the ceiling. As far as not getting to the QB i have to pause on that one. remember one thing denver defense was designed for speed rush off the edges not up the middle. Philli is philli and they have always had their defense built so their stars shine. Lets see what happens we may be surprised. Two big and quick DT is something we have never had in recent years |

Thanks for the additional contract info hagan!
It's really nice to see that Bunkley was willing to work out a deal like that, which doesn't tie up a lot of cap room in the first two season, and then the salary cap jumps in 2014 so the increased cap hits won't be a problem. Now, if only they could still sign Hawthorne to a similar contract... |
