Is JJ trying to curry favor with Payton
“I just wanted to as a friend, as a real friend, I just wanted to give him a little love in whatever way you want to call it,” Jones said. “I understand the need. I support the commissioner and what we are doing. I understand it. But I feel really bad for him and Mickey (Loomis) and Tom (Benson). I feel bad for them. It means so much to the fans of New Orleans. I feel bad for New Orleans. I have a very soft spot for them. When they are not yelling for the Saints most of them are yelling for the Cowboys.
“I feel terrible for the fans of New Orleans,” Jones continued. “But it is what it is. The fans of New Orleans and New Orleans have had to take it on the chin a lot. If anybody can handle this they can. It still doesn’t make it any easier." Cowboys Corner: Jerry Jones feels terrible for good friend Sean Payton, the Saints and fans in New Orleans |

I'd imagine there are over 25 or so teams trying to curry favor with Payton.

Old Rivalry
The Saints and the Cowboys are rivals. This rivalry is not our most intense rivalry, but, it is real.
The Saints/Cowboys rivalry goes back to the early days of the Saints when both the Saints and Cowboys were in the same Division in the NFL: The Capitol Division. They played four games in the two seasons that they both played in the Capitol Division. The seasons were 1967 and 1969. For some odd reason, the Saints transferred to the NFL Century Division for the 1968 season. The Cowboys won all four games during this Saints/Cowboys divisional rivalry, but, one game at Tulane Stadium was particularly and typically, for the early Saints, HARD-FOUGHT. The game was on Sunday afternoon, September 28, 1969. I was at the game, and the crowd was REALLY into it. All of the Old Heroes played in the game: #46 Danny Abramowicz at WR, #17 Billy Kilmer at QB, #81 Doug Atkins at DE, #76 Dave Rowe at DT and Al Dodd at WR. The Old Heroes made me proud that day, but the rival Dallas Cowboys won 21-17. There are some Saints fans in Northwest Louisiana who are also Cowboys fans, but, those Saints fans are in the minority. |
