Spielman was a badass. I'm sure he's probably laid down his share of bounty money, and prolly won a lot more than he lost.

I really like Spielman as the Vikes' GM - he has made some really good staff and player decisions along the years, and it was a good decision for the team to move him up to take this official position with team.

Are you thinking of Chris Spielman? This isn't the same guy, it's his older brother. He was a scout for the Lions at the same time Chris Spielman was playing for Detroit.

As far as Chris goes, Detroit sportstalk did reference interviews with him acknowledging bounties back in the '90s and that a pot of cash was awarded for the most sacks, tackles for losses and other statistics, at the end of the season, the pot being never more then $1000. As confirmed by his teammate, Marc Spindler, they did have agreements to hit opponents as hard as they could in order to knock them out of a game, though not for money or to end careers.

Just another example of how it's league-wide and viewed mostly as a motivational tool among players/coaches.

I still think if it wasn't for the terminology used by Williams, ie 'cart-off/knock-out', the outcry wouldn't have been half as much.
