I'm glad Gregg Williams is gone. And to be honest, I did notice some things in games that were a direct result of Williams that I didn't enjoy watching to put it mildly. I hope Spags and the new linebackers can bring some basic tackling back to our team.
The last 4 minutes of that game was the direct result of Williams. I'm sorry but a 12 yr old could call a better defense after your Offense won the game for you TWICE. The guy called a blitz seems like every single play instead of playing total coverage to make sure they didn't get in the endzone. He blitzed after Sproles caught the first TD to put us up by 4. Then instead of LEARNING from the mistake he made the first time HE DID IT AGAIN! I'm sorry but.....it just makes me so angry that Brees had 2 of his defining moments (you can't tell me that those last 2 TDs wouldn't have been on his HOF highlight reel) pissed away by his DC.

I couldn't agree with this more. It's one of the reasons why that loss still stings today almost as badly as it did the day it happened.

...Silver got the information from filmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who had access to team meetings and functions while working on a documentary on former Saints player Steve Gleason, who's currently battling ALS. More injurious to the Saints' appeals: According to several reports, the team was warned by the league just two weeks before to stop any intent or mention of bounty practices. It is not yet known whether the NFL became aware of Williams' speech during their investigation.

From the Silver story and the audio you can hear here (Warning: it's NSFW -- pretty profane stuff), here's Williams on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, with after he trots out his old "Kill the head and the body will die" favorite:

"We hit [expletive] Smith right there' — then he points under his chin [and continues] — 'remember me.' Then he rubs his thumb against his index and middle fingers — the cash sign — and says, 'I got the first one. I got the first one. Go get it. Go lay that [expletive] out."
That's Pamphilon claiming that Williams used the cash sign. Then, Williams on 49ers running back Frank Gore:
"We've got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore's head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways."
Williams on 49ers running back Kendall Hunter:

"Little 32, we want to knock the [expletive] out of him. He has no idea what he's in for. When he's on the sideline, we've gotta turn that [expletive] over, turn their coaches over, turn the spectators over. Go and get that [expletive] on the sidelines."
GREAT STUFF, BUT THE ONLY ILLEGAL HIT IN THE GAME WAS PUT ON PIERRE THOMAS!

Why is Sean Payton completely responsible for this?

Gregg Williams gets suspended and hardly takes ANY CRITICISM for all this. It's ALL SEAN PAYTON'S FAULT! B.S.

I agree completely. Williams did some very good things with the Saints but he was so obsessed with blitzing the opposing teams saw it a mile away. We should not have lost that game. It was an atrocious effort on Gregg Williams' part.

Without all those turnovers we do win the game. That's not his fault. I think he did a good job considering the talent he had to work. He committed to putting pressure on Smith and it worked much of the game. Was it great, no, but it was more than enough IMO. Putting his whole career with the Saints on that one drive is extremely critical. He helped us win a lot of games with a bunch of C- to B players and when coach asked him to get the D nasty he did exactly that.

Yeah I remember vividly, I was at work running around like a maniac trying to get my work done and get back to where the big screen was to see the end of the game (I had to go in right at the start of the freaking fourth quarter) and was able to see us come back twice only to have stupid hair Williams brain fart away everything.

All of us, co-workers and customers alike just went dead silent in disbelief. It seemed like he wanted us to lose. Why else would you leave their ONLY good receiver one on one on TWO consecutive drives with the season on the line?

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
