Haz showing interest in Phillip Rivers?

From the Star-Telegram:

"I love Rivers," New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett said. "I think he's a winner. He's tough. The first time I really got a look at him was last year. I went down to spring practice. His throwing motion was really strange, but he made all the throws."

I seriously don't think we will go QB, but its an interesting angle.

I swear, if we take a QB in round 1 - I\'m finding someone else to root for because this team would officialy be clueless/hopeless.

How long have you been a Saints fan, rage?
After all that\'s happened with this team through the years this is the last straw? You\'re fine with the Ricky Williams draft but if the Saints draft a qb this year you\'re jumping bandwagons?

This almost certainly won\'t happen but if it does, be sure to let all of us know that you and your vast football intellect have foregone your loyalties to this organization.

Not to defend rAge, cause that will never happen, but what would your initial reaction be if this did pan out? I\'d be pretty P.O.\'d.

I wouldn\'t call it a smoke screen. He probably does like Rivers, but he didn\'t say he was looking to draft him.

Like 80% of everything else on this board right now, I was merely speculating. It\'s like you can\'t ask a hypothetical around here without getting hit with the \"He won\'t be there\" bat. Jesus.

Remember last year\'s draft the admin had baited everyone into thinking we would be picking a CB.....I call it a smokescreen.......But has anyone yet figured out why we didn\'t draft a CB? This year if a QB is picked over a LB it would pi-- off a few fans. Keep in mind I am in know way advocating that Brooks is the future.

If we want Rivers, we are going to have to trade up to get him. I just can\'t see him falling all the way to the 18th selection.

Rivers seems like a high risk prospect to me. He will either be really good or really not good. I can\'t see a great deal of middle ground with him. I woud not be in favor of such a coin flip with our first selection given the needs we have on the defensive side of the ball.

BandB-
If this were to happen I\'d be pretty upset. Discombobulated, but switch teams? If I can endure all these tough years as a Saints fan then I think that this could be a forgivable offense. A qb would have to be pretty dadgum special to warrant a pick in the first round when the Saints seem to be set at that position.

My response to rage\'s post was a slightly overboard seeing as how his comment was probably made in jest. If his comment wasn\'t made in jest then I meant every word. Disloyalty is a serious offense. To me, if a man has no loyalty then he has no worth.

To borrow from Gator.. [hands on hips with flag blowing in the background].

Haslett is most likely just getting the Saints fans ready for the block buster trade of this years draft .

Brooks to the Chargers for the number 1 pick .

McCarthy has come out and said he would take Manning , Saintsfan has made it clear there is no way . Looks like a done deal to me .... :P

The QB prospects are the only ones Haslett will gladly discuss. Just imagine his reaction if you asked him to share his views on Vilma, Williams, Hall and Robinson.
IF this would somehow happen in another universe, I would be rather upset. I agree with Haz08 that he is a high risk player (even more so than other QBs).

I moved to New Orleans in 1998 and that\'s when I became a fan. Yeah, that\'s not too long ago but I will stick by my teams through it all...unless they do something that shows that the team doesn\'t care about winning. No, I didn\'t go through all the early years that were really bad (then again, I also wasn\'t alive or old enough most of those years to know) but my college team is Notre Dame (I was born about 20 minutes from the college and went to dozens of games growing up), and we all know how bad they have been the past decade. :casstet:

I doubt I would switch teams, but I would probably become a fan of two teams for the time being.

i wouldn\'t be opposed to rivers... if we can move brooks out of town for something we really need, like a LB or CB, or even a draft pick

JimBone 04-20-2004 12:43 PM

Haz showing interest in Phillip Rivers?

Brooks is one of the few people on this team that can play...Why would you want to move him at all and just open up another hole on this team that is full of holes as it is? Trading Brooks leaves the Saints with QB being our biggest need and the cap hit we would take would prevent us from being able to fill the other holes we already have at CB, LB, DT, WR, and FB. It is the craziest thing i have ever heard. I dont know why Brooks get all of the heat? We never made the playoffs with Deuce and i wouldnt trade him for anyone in the league. It always falls on Brooks\' shoulders when he clearly wasnt the reason for the Saints struggles. Crazy the way some of you think sometimes.

as a former QB myself, i can recognize that a QB has many responsibilities that other players do not... one is to be the leader of the offense totally, and of the entire team... one must play with poise yet with heart... aaron, while very talented and productive (besides inopportune fumbles and miscues), is NOT the leader he needs to be... frankly, i don\'t think that his personality will let him be, but by the same token, until he grasps the offense and tells them this is my huddle, my team then we, as a team, won\'t go far. notice i\'m not condoning a \"me first\" attitude by aaron, but rather for him to play like it means more than just another paycheck... that means quit smiling like a retard when messing up...no one wants to see him grinning like an imbicile... we want him to throw off his chinstrap, take off his helmet angrily, and storm back to the sideline... at least that he show emotion, rather than complacency.

JimBone 04-20-2004 03:45 PM

and what was the highest level that you played QB? Because Chad Hess was my QB in flag football and he was our leader but our team sucked. He did develop as a decent center, but QB just wasnt in the cards for him.

And please tell me why the QB HAS to be the leader of a team? You cant tell me that Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer were the leaders of their respective teams during their Super Bowl runs. I dont believe in the philosophy that the leader MUST be the QB. I didnt see Brooks smile once last year after a bad play...not that i have never seen it, but not at all last year.

I pretty much disagree with everything you just said.

This is crazy.

Aaron is the most talented player to ever put on the black and gold. He gave us our first playoff win and is recognized by everyone in the league (except his own fans) as a bright young talent on the rise.

Sure he makes mistakes, (and he does need work on touch passes) but mistakes come from taking chances and without taking chances there is no way to win. He needs support and time to develop his talent. Serious discussion about p^ssing away an elite quarterback for a draft pick is too insane to even seriously indulge. :casstet:

Watch and see what would happen if Brooks wasnt around...you guys who hate him now would pray to the Lord almighty to have him back. No one likes the fumbles, but the guy can make plays that most other QB\'s wouldnt even attempt to make.

I didn\'t say I hated him, I just think you\'re overstepping your boundaries when you say he\'s the greatest to don the black and gold. Hell, he\'s not even the best player on this team.

I wasnt the one who said he was the greatest to wear the uniform. This team relies on Deuce and everyone knows it. But you just dont know what you got, till its gone.

I like that song too.

And who is the best player on this team? You have to be talking about Duece, because there is nobody on defense that could claim that title.
Duece may be the best running back we\'ve ever had, but that doesn\'t make him the best player on the roster. And it doesn\'t change that George Rogers still has all the Saints rushing records.
Aaron is hands down the best Quarterback we\'ve ever had and the most important player on the offense. This year he will throw enough to go past Everett on the all time passing yards and over Hebert the year after. Any way you look at it, Brooks is the best signal caller this team has ever had. He is also hands down the most valuable player on this team.

I don\'t think Brooks is a bad QB, he has tremendous passing strength, accuracy, and athleticism, he has pretty average field awareness. I do question his motivation and ledarship at times.

He is probably a top 15, maybe a top 10 NFL QB right now though.

JimBone 04-21-2004 10:23 AM

If his line stays healthy all year, and if his receivers decide they wanna catch the ball this year, Aaron Brooks is gonna put up some monster numbers. He is gonna have to since we havent done much to help the defense out...YET. I have nothing but confidence in Aaron Brooks.

guys i\'m not trying to say ab isn\'t a great qb, b/c he is... but he\'s not a great leader... you can tell... if his WR runs an incorrect route, ab doesn\'t show any leadership to go over and help correct the problem... his attitude is well, it wasn\'t my fault... the qb may not have to be the leader of the entire team (i guess i got a little carried away). and about johnson and dilfer, how do any of you know what went on in that lockerroom, in the huddles? you don\'t, so don\'t go around saying they weren\'t leaders of their offense or team or anything else... they might not have gotten the headlines, but they might have gotten the team to play... ab IS NOT the best player on the team, and he never was, and even if deuce left, he still wouldn\'t be... no doubt the guy is talented beyond talent, and i do hope he succeeds... jim, how many times do i have to tell you about alll those \"ifs\"... you can\'t rely on that. any the man smiles more than paris hilton poses for pictures.

But Paris HIlton is hot...and you never answered my queation as to what was the highest level you played QB. And how do you know what AB talks to the guys about on the sideline? You cant say what Dilfer and Johnson did, neither can i for that matter, but how dod you know AB doesnt talk to them about it on the sideline?

jim, you can see how non-chalant he walks over to the sideline and just gets his little towel, puts it on his neck and never takes the reins and tries to educate his receivers on what is the right way to run the play.... my thinking is that he doesn\'t know the plays well enough, another sign that he isn\'t the leader we need him to be... not knowing the playbook is also the reason he nevers audibles before the snap.
