Could very well be, after all they did show interest in Shanle at St. Louis during last offseason FA period, and therefore, it would make sense to deduce from that that Spags likes him as a player. I guess what matters more is when he made that statement? If he made it before any personnel transactions were made - then it makes sense to say that he would start, like he did all last season. But with all the new additions to the LB corps, it would be hard to argue for him having the first pick at the starting job at his position, although I guess he can win it during camp if he is still around. I just think that he becomes a cap casualty at the end of the day, while he doesn't make huge dollars, a $2.95M cap hit is still significant together with the fact that he only has one more year left in his contract. |

He also said that if Vilma was healthy, Shanle was NOT a starter. |

I don't mind Shanle if he is playing on the strong side. Although I wonder why keep him when you have Will Herring who is pretty much the same exact player with a little more speed.

...and with a $1.2M smaller cap hit than Shanle has. Herring supposedly has good coverage skills, but unfortunately he missed most of last season due to the injury, so it's hard to assess whether that notion holds true - he did have that one pick if I remember correctly. Also, Herring will be under contract for the 2013 season with a $1.8M cap hit, so it would make sense to keep him if it came down to either him or Shanle, who would become a FA next offseason - or maybe a trade if someone was interested? |
who would be interested in a trade for Shanle?! lol
