ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reports that New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, who will begin serving an eight-game suspension for his role in the team's bounty program, had an illegal eavesdropping device that allowed him to listen to real-time playcalls of opposing coaches during the 2002-2004 seasons.
The Saints denied the report. "This is 1,000 percent false," said Greg Bensel, Saints vice president of communications. "This is 1,000 percent inaccurate."
In an e-mail to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports and the NFL Network, Loomis denied the allegations directly.

Media (esp. ESPN) is eating this up.... nothing sells like a good scandal. And if no scandal comes along, then try and make one up with unnamed sources and zero proof.

What kills me about this whole thing is that this was TEN years ago. Why now?

Next they will be trying to dig up some dirt on the Bensons.
What's really bad is, if you dig long enough, sooner or later you'll find somebody
that is willing to tell a lie on you for free, especially if they can do it anonymously.
Please don't let there be money involved.

Sports Illusterated's take:

Saints deny ESPN's Mickey Loomis eavesdropping charges - NFL - SI.com

Key points from the article:

ESPN could not determine if the system was ever used

Saints spokesman:
We asked ESPN to provide us evidence to support their allegations and they refused," Bensel said. "The team and Mickey are seeking all legal recourse regarding these false allegations"

This doesn't have the same feel to it as the Bounty stuff.

DESTROY ESPN!

Honestly, I'm hoping this goes down as overactive journalism. I'm also noticing other writers having a hard time touching this issue because...

THE LORD HATH GIVEN THE SAINTS THE POWER TO SUE

AND I HOPE THEY SUE ESPN'S PANTS OFF

Here's the question, if ESPN authorized this breaking story, and they're responsible for what their writers write, what they put on TV, maybe Goodell should force them to give up the first 8 weeks for NFL coverage for allowing this LIE to circulate.

I mean, ESPN is trying to personally damage the career of Mickey Loomis, correct?

Ironically, during that time period I swore that other teams knew every play we called before we snapped the ball.

Did Mickey have it set on "send" instead of "receive"?

Yeah, that's it......had absolutely zero to do with your QB being Aaron Brooks.

You mean the Aaron Brooks who ended his career 4-3 versus the bucs?
