Reaction hard to fathom

Few people who cross the powerful NFL win. Ohio State\'s Maurice Clarett and Southern Cal\'s Mike Williams found that out the hard way last week. So did ESPN when the NFL came down hard on its controversial Playmakers television series. The NFL plays hardball and takes no prisoners.

The Mannings, meanwhile, tried to handle their challenge in a classy, under-the-radar manner. Rather than go public and embarrass San Diego, Archie meet privately with the team\'s president and GM. He listened to their presentation, then told them Eli was not going to play for the Chargers.

San Diego, in an attempt to strengthen its trade position, opted to leak word of the meeting and the Mannings\' intentions to the press. From there, it took on a life of its own in the media until a draft day deal was finally worked out with the New York Giants.

Although Eli ultimately got what he wanted, and avoided the dreaded Chargers, he paid a price. A segment of the media, and not just from the San Diego area, beat him up pretty good. He was booed, insulted and called names at the NFL draft headquarters in New York.

It will carry over into next season, as fans and that certain media element pull for him to fail.

All in all, the hostile reaction is baffling. This is, by all indications, a forthright, really upstanding kid from a good family. He\'s not a punk or thug, hasn\'t broken any laws or been accused of anything sleazy.

All he wanted to do was maximize his chance to succeed in his chosen profession by avoiding a sinking ship. Who, in that position, wouldn\'t attempt to do the same?

Eli saw what happened to his dad, didn\'t want history to repeat, was in a rare position to have some leverage and took advantage of it. He should be applauded, not cursed, ridiculed and booed. He beat the almighty NFL and its insufferable system.

People who want to boo that, especially media lapdogs kissing up to the NFL, need to get a life.

He\'d be thankful for the oppurtunity. I have no respect for this little punk -- and I\'m losing it for Archie too. It\'s just bad Karma.

Let the Damage control begin. This quote is silly! He wanted to maximize his chance alright -- and while it\'s hard to fault a guy for that -- the problem is that he manipulated the system to do it, and that\'s just wrong. He manipulated the system in the same way Terrell Owens did...Eli appears to be in good company eh?

How much do we think the mannings paid this guy? Again I say, let the damange control begin. And just what, may I ask, is so \"insufferable\" about the NFL\'s drafting system. It appears to be a good way to let the weaker teams either choose to draft a particular player or trade down to accumulate more picks. What\'s \"insufferable\" about that system? The man that wrote this article is CLEARLY (Sorry whodat) either (a) on Crack, (b) on the Mannings payroll, or (c) both.

The draft gives the TEAM the option, not the players. Once the player has some time under his belt in the NFL he has some options, but he\'s supposed to pay his dues first. That\'s the way it works here at my job -- and probably yours too 08 (if you have one :P ). Again I ask, why should poor little punkie Eli consider himself any better than anyone else.

As you\'ve said recently 08, just because a person has the ability to do a particular thing doesn\'t mean he should. \"Reaction hard to fathom\" my eye. It\'s the ONLY reaction anyone who champions fair play could or should have.

That is all.

You see 08, here\'s a guy who wasn\'t a spoiled bratty punkie punk wanting to pick and chose his way into the NFL. Here\'s a guy who figures it\'s an oppurtunity he\'s fortunate to have. I like that. Don\'t you?

\"It\'s something I\'ve been working on and something I always dreamed of. Just to have that opportunity, you can\'t ask for anything more.\"
