He's definitely got great passing skills, leadership, intangibles, character, etc. It would make all the sense in the world to take a young player and groom him as a backup QB. Except ...
1) we only have room for 53 players on the roster 2) We have to have room for our special teamers and also key backups at various positions 3) We couldn't get Keenum to the practice squad without exposing him to waivers and having him get sniped by another team. 4) We'll probably need extra defensive bodies on the roster for the forthcoming suspensions 5) We committed to Chase Daniel with a contract extension and due to the roster limitations, usually only keep 2 QB's Keenum would be a no-brainer for us or most any other team. Except the NFL and players union isn't set up to develop players, like MLB or NBA. It's set up to throw rookies into the fire, bring in "camp bodies" and put the lot of them out on the street. The NFL/union should have a developmental squad that doesn't involve the waivers and limitations the practice squad has. But $$$ for the NFL and NFLPA wins the battle outright over developing talent, which is a sad outcome. |
