Vitt: "We think we've got a young Robert Meachem"
Saints interim coach Joe Vitt says the team has internally compared second-year WR Joseph Morgan to outgoing deep threat Robert Meachem.
"We think we've got a young Robert Meachem," Vitt said. Morgan, "stashed" on I.R. as a rookie following a minor knee scope, is healthy and making a case for a roster spot after an impressive 2011 summer. Last preseason, Morgan caught a 56-yard touchdown bomb from Chase Daniel and also returned a punt for a touchdown. He's worth monitoring for deep-league purposes. "A young Robert Meachem" does not impress me. Hopefully, Morgan & Toon will both be better.

Unless Vitt says that Brees is a shorter version of Ryan Leaf, I trust his player evaluations. |
I don't know; Meachem shown glimpses of greatness... If Morgan is showing anything relative to those glimpses I'd be happy with it
|
Morgan was tearing it up last preseason, almost enough for the saints to take Courtney Roby off the team. Seems like to me Morgan, Toon will get spots and Arrington will be the odd man out.......... Again!!!!
|
How many 1,000 yds seasons did Meachem have? How many double digit TD seasons did Meachem have? How many drops did Meachem have? Case closed. Like I said......I hope both of them are better.
|
Ok, thats good news.
|
I can't wait to see what this guy can do

The fact that meachem hasn't posted 1000 yard seasons etc still doesn't rule out of the fact he was a good player for us and helped us win a superbowl
If meachem didn't strip that ball and return for a TD, and then catch a 50 yard TD pass to send the game to overtime vs the skins in 09, we wouldn't have got homefield advantage and the path to the Super Bowl would have changed Meachem may not have been the best in our offense, but if Morgan resembles his play in any way, he will be a good player for us |

Damned if he didn't make those catches when we REALLY needed'em. The only thing better than one Meachem replacement? TWO DAT BABY!
|
One play does not make a season fellas.
Meachem was good, not great. IMO he and Devery are interchangeable and Henderson is cheaper, that's why he's still here. Besides, Meachem never struck me as the sharpest tool in the shed. |
I have not problem having an undrafted free agent playing up to a former #1 draft pick's level. Seems like a win there.

Meachem was alright.....it just took him longer than we hoped to grow into the spot.
|
"A young Robert Meachem" ... what is he, 27? He's a WR, not a rock star. Odds are he'll be around a few more years.
|
Wow, tough crowd...In my book there is something kinda wrong with you if you didn't at least like Meachem as a Saint, or have a warm spot in your heart for him...the strip!!! The TD bombs over the middle!!! Come on, football is ENTERTAINMENT, people. Screw the stats, I am still gonna be watching that Redskins clip on Youtube once or twice a year, when I am old and senile and in the nursing home!

Meachem made two, (2), outstanding plays in that game against Washingon in that game; the interception-strip-return for a TD and a TD reception that I believe sent the game into OT. No one said Meachem was going to make people forget Jerry Rice, but, IMO, Meachem doesn't get the credit he deserves from some Saints fans. |
1st off, I wasn't bashing Meachem. He was a Saint!!! He was a decent ball player.....but that's it. He NEVER lived up to his 1st round expectations.....no matter how you want to paint the picture. As someone mentioned before, Devery has been every bit as good. He did make some great plays. He also had some downright pitiful drops. For every....."enough said" video of Meachem making a play, there was one where he wasn't making a play. Bottom line is.....like I said.....I hope that both of the new guys are better than he was.

I remember a Robert Meachem, drafted in the first round out of Tennessee - D'oh - :homer: that was not even in shape! Hopefully Morgan is better than that... And there is a reason why Vitt is only where he is and no more... |

I don't think we should ever take a first rounder again..

"722 yds. w/ 9TDS. "
Um, pretty sure thats good for a #3 wr.I would take that from Toon or Morgan as a #4 wr. |

I dare say Porters interception in SB 44 of manning made a season... he could have been burnt all season like Mike mckenzie and that interception would have made him a favorite in anyone's book. That being said... Meachem's hands were not always soft, and there is a reason he was known by some as Meat-Chump. |
I miss the OLD Robert Meachem, sorry.
But I look forward to Joe Morgan making his own reputation. Alaska |
Can we see some Henderson stat's, please...
Alaska |
I was never a big fan of Meach. He took forever to learn his routes and would disappear for stretches.

Henderson -32 catches, 580 yards, 3 TDs Meachem - 35 catches, 567 yards, 6 TDs and Moore - 48 catches, 556 yards, 6 TD's |
He stretched the field, I liked him.
|
Well I liked meachum n hope he explodes with the chargers
|
Vitt was also quoted as saying, "Akiem Hicks is looking like the second coming of Jonathan "Eat Everything In Sight" Sullivan."
Awesome!!!! Wait...what? |
Question wasn't Meachem young when we had him ?
|
I've never understood why people are down on Meachem. When I have watched him play I have always been very impressed. I don't think you can flash the stats of anyone in Brees's receiving corps to make a point. An interesting stat though would be how many times Meachem was targeted against his drops/yards/TDs.
I am pleased to see Morgan getting hyped and Toon as well. I am a bit disappointed for Arrington who has always sat out as that 'guy who could be big' and then never seems to get in. I'm also not sold on Roby any more. But that may be me being disappointed at the fluff at SanFran last year. |

Lance didn't have double digit TD's or 1000 yrd. Neither did Henderson.... As for drops they have all had critical drops and or in colstons case fumbles at a time or two... While he was here Meacham was a productive saint with flurries of great..... We don't need Nick Toon or Joe Morgan to come in and set the world on fire ( even though I think they make us even more dynamic) just filling in I think is enough for rookie receivers. |
