From the ground... to the air... back to the ground?
We all know that the game has transitioned from a ground game to a more pass oriented game. We also know that the NFL is changing the rules to make it more of a pass happy league because they believe that is what fans want to see. $$$
In a 2010 concussion report Concussions by “general” Position
Lets look at the numbers. Offense had 81 Concussions, of those 81 ... 54 were positions relevant to the passing game. Defense has 86 concussions, of those 86, DB had 44, LB had 25 (I am going to assume a good majority of those LB concussions were passing plays for the sake of this argument. Defensive Backs have nearly twice the concussion rate of any other position. Possibly due to poor form tackling, but probably due to the increased amount of momentum that a CB and WR have over say a LB and a HB... So out of 167 total concussions, 125 were relayed to the passing game. That's a 77% concussion rate due to the passing game. Would just changing rules to make a more balanced game make it safer? Discuss. |
As a fan, do you want 'safer' game, or a fast-paced, high-scoring game?
Just like everything, $$ will be the deciding factor, player safety be damned! |
I think this is excellent point sir! The 'safety-conscious' NFL changed the rules that have made the game a more dangerous one. Why? For the all-mighty dollar.
Excellent point indeed! You sure you aren't a lawyer? LMAO |

Awesome stats.....thanks for sharing.

... interesting conundrum, but I can't see the NFL returning to the single-score, grind-'em-out games of the 60's/70's ... they'll lose their fanbase.
