QB School...a walkthrough

Three months before the start of training camp and four months before the start of the regular season, Aaron Brooks and Todd Bouman arrive at the Saints training facility on Airline Drive for another day of work.

This is the NFL offseason. But Brooks and Bouman are anything but "off." For the Saints quarterbacks, it's the second consecutive week of "voluntary" work, or what the NFL terms "OTAs" (Organized Team Activity days).

The Saints will emphasize more one-back, three-receiver and two-tight end formations this season and have tweaked dozens of plays because of it
OK, that\'s not new news, but this is going to TOTALLY change our offense this season. I have some observations. I\'d like to get some feedback and anything else someone might like to add.

1. No fullback.

Advantages: (a) defenses can\'t key on the fullback and anticipate what hole Deuce runs through. (b) harder for teams to put 8-men in the box to stop the run because they will have more coverage responsibilities with 3-receivers and 2-tighends on the field.
Disadvantages: (a) No lead blocker for Deuce. (b)No back left in the backfield to pick up blitzes.

2. Three receiver/2-tightend set.

Advantages: (a)more options for Brooks to throw the ball to. (b) gets our play-makers on the field(speed) and creates match-up problems for a defense.

Disadvantages: Aaron Brooks is more exposed to the pass rush. He will have to make quick decisions and get rid of the ball quickly.

Summary: The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. I think this plays to our strengths. I also think Deuce will catch more passes this year because Brooks is going to have to get rid of the ball quicker and Deuce is going to the the safety valve. I also think our tightends will have an opportunity to be more productive out of this offense. This is an offense that is designed to put points on the board quickly; ala the 2002 offense. If successful, it\'s going to force the opposing teams offense to pass more which is going to really test our secondary, but will allow us to really use our pass rush.(blitz)

On the surface, it doesn\'t seem major. But in the West Coast system, where every move is coordinated and synchronized, such a change requires an enormous amount of preparation. The meeting takes a full hour, in which McCarthy races through about 20 plays.

\"And that\'s just one of 12 installations we\'ll do to get the entire offense in,\" McCarthy said.

Next to McCarthy, Brooks and Bouman are expected to know the offense better than anyone. \"There is a very high demand on the quarterback position here,\" Brooks said. \"We have to learn a lot. We have to know the run game more than anyone else. We have to be in control of it. There\'s more to it than just showing up and throwing four or five touchdown passes on Sunday.\"
Aaron Brooks is going to have more weight placed upon his shoulders this year. Some say he can\'t read defenses and get rid of the ball quickly. Well, we are going to get a chance to see if that\'s true. Brooks will not have time to sit back in the pocket and hold the ball. I do think he will have more opportunities to run the ball though.

I don\'t think it\'s the abolishment of the fullback, or else they wouldn\'t have drafted one and signed Sam Gash. Every year they tweak the offense, looking for ways to get the most out of it.

Three receiver sets create the possibility of mismatches and two tight end sets allow for lots of motion possibilities which disguies the intention of the play, be it run or throw.

Some of my favorite sets have two backs and three receivers, I hope we see that as well this year.

I didn\'t mean we were NEVER going to use a fullback. I was listing what I thought were the advantages and disadvantages of playing without one.

You see, the article was talking about...oh, nevermind....

I read that we only used our fullback 33% of the time in previous years. That\'s a lot less than I realized. This year it\'s going to be even less. So, I expect we will be seeing 3 and 4 receiver sets quite often. I like it!!

Dear Aaron Brooks,

If you can show up on Sunday and throw four or five TD passes I won\'t care if you know the playbook (or your name for that matter), fumble, or look generally dopey (as usual). You just show up and throw 4 TDs and I\'ll support you all the way to your record 64 TD year. Thanks.

Sincerely,
