Sean Payton and Joe Vitt may have been the only two people in New Orleans who weren't worried about whether Drew Brees and the Saints would come to terms on a contract extension. But they know the franchise quarterback better than most.
Drew Brees agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract Friday, easing the minds of Saints fans throughout the region. "I've said this all along. I know what our organization's about. I know what Drew's about. And I know how much winning means to our organization and Drew. I was never concerned," Vitt, the team's interim coach, said Friday afternoon after Brees reached a five-year, $100 million agreement. "I just think these things go down to the last minute. Mickey has got to juggle contracts and the salary cap. Drew has to worry about getting the best deal he can, because this could be the last big deal of his career." Vitt is sitting in for Payton as the Saints' coach serves a season-long suspension for his role in the team's bounty program. As a result, Payton can't have contact with Brees or the organization, but he unknowingly echoed Vitt's confidence that he knew a deal would be made before Monday's 3 p.m. deadline. "I think I said this before, it wasn't a question of 'if,' it was a question of 'when,' " Payton said. "I'm excited. I'm excited and happy for him as well as the Saints. I think it's a good deal for both parties. I know a lot of work has gone into it, with (General Manager Mickey Loomis) and (Brees' agent) Tom Condon. "I kind of look at things in a glass-half-full way. It just came down to the last couple of days, and I felt confident all along that both parties would be able to work something out, and I'm happy they did." In the wake of the news that he'd have his quarterback when players report to training camp July 24, Vitt called Brees the best player he has ever been around. "You know as well as I do, this is a great player. People throw the word 'great' around now like they're breath mints. But he is a great player," Vitt said. "And the only thing that overshadows his ability to play is his character and his leadership. Combine that with the respect he has from coaches and teammates, and I don't know how you put that into words properly. read more |
