This Better Be A Great Year

...Because next year will be much diferent - CAP wise.
It's great that Drew got paid. He deserves it. But it has consequences.
Quote from Mike Tripplet's win-win story:
"This year, the combined cap figures of Brees, Jahri Evans, Ben Grubbs, Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Will Smith, Brodrick Bunkley, Jonathan Vilma, Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne is scheduled to be $37.1 million. Next year, those 10 players are scheduled to account for a combined cap figure of $85.4 million."
The team cap is 120 and maybe 130 next year.
We better have a pretty good season.

vpheughan 07-14-2012 09:51 PM

There won't be a next year. The world ends 12/21/12.

QBREES9 07-14-2012 10:23 PM

I don't know anything about the cap at all. What i have heard on the NFL radio. Is Drew sign will help next year.

i hate to post an Nfl.com link, but this explains it all too well...scary figures for the cap:

Drew Brees' contract: What the New Orleans Saints owe - NFL.com

Drew Brees' new five-year, $100 million contract makes the New Orleans Saints quarterback the NFL's top-paid player on an average annual salary ($20 million). But the way the Saints structured the deal, it gives the franchise some $6 million more in cap space than if Brees had signed his franchise tender. Here's the year-by-year breakdown:
Brees agrees to NFL's richest deal

Loomis will spin his web of magic again next year, and the year after, and then he and Drew will probably renegotiate. Relax everybody. Loomie is cap royalty. Nobody does it better, and few even come close.

Thats a negative Ghost Ryder.... Cap relief in terms of increased cap will not be of any sort of significance until around 2016.

pherein 07-15-2012 06:15 AM

From what I understand this means very little. Loomis knows he will have to renegotiate in 3 years to elevate Cap by extending Brees's contract, reduce the contract based on performance, work out a trade to reduce the cap hit, or their are a number of other alternatives.
Like I believed with the Brees signing, this is not a big issue until 3 years from now. If Brees performs well I am sure he will want to play until he's 40, and work with the Saints to reduce the cap hit for an added 2 year contract.
It is in his own interests for fielding a decent team around him.
Fans should probably shelve any cap problems regarding Brees till 2015. Then we'll see were we stand.

Danno 07-15-2012 09:03 AM

Where's the list of salary caps that will come off the books next year.
What players will be forced to renegotiate due to excessive 2013 cap hits.

I'm sure there are quite a few mediocre players who are scheduled to count a lot more against the cap than their talent warrants. Some will be cut, some will restructure, some will sign new long term cap friendly deals.

Way too many things can happen to get worried now.

jlouhill 07-15-2012 09:09 AM

Like I've said before on here, some of you would complain if the sun rose in the west tomorrow.

Rugby Saint II 07-15-2012 01:03 PM

Well we can save money by cutting Will Smith. And there is the distinct possibility that Vilma won't be back.

foreverfan 07-15-2012 01:19 PM

After we win the Superbowl again, some of the team will be dismantled. It happens just about every year.

st thomas 07-15-2012 03:22 PM

one day at a time. lets get to camp for some football news.

Ashley 07-15-2012 03:57 PM

Yes lets bag that sliver football at the end of this year, then we can talk about the next.... WHO DAT

Players like Smith and Vilma won't matter either as this is probably their last season under their present contract. I think they will restructure or be cut outright.

Mardigras9 07-15-2012 04:58 PM

Don't even want to think about it. Just want to regroup after the Brees drama and move forward. The bounty drama is still lingering anyway. We'll see who makes the team first.

Jamessr 07-15-2012 05:28 PM

Player restructure all the time.... Next year will be no different

blackangold 07-15-2012 08:08 PM

STOP getting your panties in a bunch worrying about next year...

Just be happy that every team is still terrified of facing the Saints. Personally I can't wait for this year and the next year and the year after that. This is a new Saints organization, we won't back down and we wont take a step back. Mickey will continue to work his magic and we will have no worries until Brees wants to retire.

Great now everyone is going to cry about his replacement, I apologize now for the threads created about our next QB :\

I was thinking about making a thread that just covered Contracts etc... One so we could all see who was coming up for a new contract and when, also to see who has not signed a new contract yer... E.G. Nick Toon.

Would be a good sticky and can be corrected every year with changes.
