This Better Be A Great Year
...Because next year will be much diferent - CAP wise.
It's great that Drew got paid. He deserves it. But it has consequences. Quote from Mike Tripplet's win-win story: "This year, the combined cap figures of Brees, Jahri Evans, Ben Grubbs, Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Will Smith, Brodrick Bunkley, Jonathan Vilma, Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne is scheduled to be $37.1 million. Next year, those 10 players are scheduled to account for a combined cap figure of $85.4 million." The team cap is 120 and maybe 130 next year. We better have a pretty good season. |

i hate to post an Nfl.com link, but this explains it all too well...scary figures for the cap:
Drew Brees' contract: What the New Orleans Saints owe - NFL.com Drew Brees' new five-year, $100 million contract makes the New Orleans Saints quarterback the NFL's top-paid player on an average annual salary ($20 million). But the way the Saints structured the deal, it gives the franchise some $6 million more in cap space than if Brees had signed his franchise tender. Here's the year-by-year breakdown: Brees agrees to NFL's richest deal Latest news: » Brees gets $100M deal | What Saints owe » Saints' focus now on football | Saints stability » Debate: What are expectations now for Saints? » Twitter response to Brees' deal | Local reaction » Brees earns more than entire Saints offense » Daniel on Brees: 'We get our leader back' Photos: » NFL's richest contracts 2012 $37 million signing bonus $3 million base CAP HIT: $10.4M ($3M + $7.4M bonus proration) 2013 $10 million total CAP HIT: $17.4M ($10M + $7.4M bonus proration) 2014 $11 million total CAP HIT: $18.4M ($11M + $7.4M bonus proration) 2015 $19 million total CAP HIT: $26.4M ($19M + $7.4M bonus proration) 2016 $20 million total CAP HIT: $27.4M ($20M + $7.4M bonus proration) |

Loomis will spin his web of magic again next year, and the year after, and then he and Drew will probably renegotiate. Relax everybody. Loomie is cap royalty. Nobody does it better, and few even come close.

From what I understand this means very little. Loomis knows he will have to renegotiate in 3 years to elevate Cap by extending Brees's contract, reduce the contract based on performance, work out a trade to reduce the cap hit, or their are a number of other alternatives.
Like I believed with the Brees signing, this is not a big issue until 3 years from now. If Brees performs well I am sure he will want to play until he's 40, and work with the Saints to reduce the cap hit for an added 2 year contract. It is in his own interests for fielding a decent team around him. Fans should probably shelve any cap problems regarding Brees till 2015. Then we'll see were we stand. |
Saints proved that pigs could fly in 2009.
Now its time for another miracle SuperBowl and go where no pig has gone before. Last edited by pherein; 07-15-2012 at 07:17 AM.. |

Where's the list of salary caps that will come off the books next year.
What players will be forced to renegotiate due to excessive 2013 cap hits. I'm sure there are quite a few mediocre players who are scheduled to count a lot more against the cap than their talent warrants. Some will be cut, some will restructure, some will sign new long term cap friendly deals. Way too many things can happen to get worried now. |
