We had a bad server crash with data corruption in September 2009 AND backup corruption - worst crash I've ever seen recovered from. Even then we posted notices on the default page. The downtime was due to me trying to recover as much data as possible. We lost of about 6 months of posts, but we survived. We have offsite and NAS backups that prevent that. In some ways this upgrade is a result of the original server explosion. After 3 days of downtime, I had to get this site back up and running so I grabbed the first available server to lease, which ended up being a lemon but got us back on our feet. This new server is a reaction to that piece of junk (which was expensive to lease BTW) that we were previously on. The new server is all XEON, Ivy Bridge, new motherboard, tons of ram etc. etc. all brand new stuff to serve us for years to come. At no time does it benefit any of us (me included) to ever keep the site offline forever. In the extreme case, if everything blew up, including the internet, we would put even a new site up temporarily until we could recover our files. So the answer is YES, if the internet blew up, if the files were gone, and I was dead, you'd probably, eventually, get an email notifying you that something happened. |
