There were 100 million reasons for Saints fans to smile last week. Drew Brees signed the richest per-season contract in NFL history.

It was a rare moment in New Orleans. There hasn't been much joy there since a playoff loss to San Francisco in January.

Even getting the Brees deal done hardly camouflages the other problems that have plagued the franchise this year — woes that easily could linger through the upcoming season.

Brees knows it. So does exiled head coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, both suspended for the 2012 season for their roles in the bounty program an NFL investigation unveiled.

Also gone for the first six games of the schedule will be Joe Vitt, who has taken over for Payton as head man to guide the team through training camp and preseason games. Who will replace Vitt when he begins his suspension remains uncertain, but continuity will take another hit in the Big Easy.

It's all stuff we've all talked about, with a few additional quotes from Tony Dungy piling on.

Believe it or not, my main worry is simply how Vitt and the other coaches will handle the routine in-game decision stuff, the under-pressure stuff, like, when to call time outs, when to ask for a measurement, sending too many men on the field, picking which end of the field in a bad-weather outdoor game, are we punting or going for it, stuff like that. The crazy stuff Payton used to do, like challenge the spot of the ball, so the referee goes off under the hood, but while the ref is under the hood and the game is stopped, Payton would be yelling at the line judge or the field judge about something else completely different.

But the regular O and D on both sides of the ball I am not nearly as worried about.

Other than Brees' return for five years and $100 million, there's barely been a positive blip on the New Orleans radar all year.
Uhh WFT???

Brodrick Bunkley - We signed one of the top DT's in the NFL, in his prime at a position we really needed.

Curtis Lofton - One of the best young MLB's in the entire NFL, and we signed him relatively cheap.

David Hawthorne - A young tackling machine that can play all 3 LB positions.

Ben Grubbs - So we lost the best OG in the NFL, but then signed a top 10 OG shortly thereafter, at a fraction of the cost.

Chris Chamberlain - A young ascending player who looks like a more athletic Shanle, and plays lights out on special teams. So we signed 3 LB's that are a upgrades to every LB we have not named Vilma.

Steve Spagnuolo -Without question the most sought after DC this offseason. Think Gregg Williams agressive style but less predictable, more discipplined and better tackling.
