Saints Nation: Saints' Cap Status for 2013 In Very Rough Shape
With the news of the new Brees deal and the talk of the Saints' cap status being in poor shape - I thought I'd look into the numbers more closely. The Saints were just over $2 million under the cap prior to the contract, which saved the Saints almost exactly $5.9 million worth of cap space for 2012. So as of today, the Saints actually have ~$8 million of cap room for this season prior to the Nick Toon contract which still needs to get done.

Bushrod and Ellis are two guys who'll free-up a lot of cap for next year, and if they roll over the cap they haven't used this season - the about $8M as of know - they'll have plenty of cap to work with come next offseason.

Not worried. If we just gave a punter 22 million, we don't have any cap problems.
Its what our GM does best. |

I thought Bushrod reworked his contract......I could be wrong. We can save a ton by letting Ellis walk next year.

Ellis is a free-agent next year so I wouldn't mind keeping him if the price is right, but his 2012 salary ain't even close to what he's worth. At worst he's an average NFL DT. Edit: Nope, no extension for Bushy yet!!! |
