No contract talks between New Orleans Saints and tackle Jermon Bushrod
A new contract for New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead doesn't necessarily mean the team will be delivering a contract for Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod in the near future.
Bushrod said he and the Saints haven't talked at all about a contract extension as the left tackle enters the final year of his contract. Bushrod signed a two-year deal leading up to the 2011 season. "Some situations, guys get extended and some other ones guys don't," Bushrod said. "At the end of the day, all guys can do is go out here and get better day in and day out and continue to fight. We'll let all of the contract stuff work itself out. I'd definitely love to be here the next few years. ... I just want to win really bad, especially this year." Bushrod has said he signed a shorter term deal in the hopes of cashing in once the deal expires at the end of this season. Those feelings haven't changed after earning his first Pro Bowl bid in 2011. "You want to continue to be rewarded for the hard work you put in," Bushrod said. "But this is not an individual game. This is a team game. I just want to continue to get better. If that happens, all that stuff will work itself out." No contract talks between New Orleans Saints and tackle Jermon Bushrod - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com |

Good. He is currently has a cap hit of $6.75M for this season, and there's no way they should pay him more than that.
If he is seeking a contract worth more than that, the Saints should let him pursue it on the open market, because he honestly isn't that good and is replaceable in my opinion quite effortlessly. |

Don't talk extension until near end of the season... We need to keep him motivated.

He may only be adequate (I agree with that assessment by the way), but he has "done his job" by and large. If we can get better, then fine. He's a good player who has only gotten better. I also like his attitude. I agree with Danno. Over-paying for Bushrod...well, I think I could justify it.

I'm pretty sure you all can guess what we're going to use our first round draft pick on next year lol.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't be OK with Bushrod as the LT, but my issue is that he'll want more money than he was given in this current contract and he'll want more years, so I'd rather part ways with him than over-pay him with a multi-year contract.
I just feel that with the O-line getting its strength from the guard pair, they could replace Bushrod quite easily with a lot more affordable option - Goodwin was a more talented player at his position than Bushrod is at LT, and the Saints were able to find a cheap replacement for him (after the Kreutz debacle) without any significant drop-off. So why couldn't they do it with Bushrod?! I'm hoping that Marcel Jones will develop into a starting RT for 2013 and they could draft a LT with immediate starting potential with the 1st round pick of next year's draft. Again, that's just my opinion, but with the back-loaded contracts the Saints have been signing lately, they have to start saving some money with some moves, and not over-paying Bushrod is a good start in my eyes. |
