"Will is not in the best football condition he should be in," Haslett said. "I think he was very sluggish. He needs to get in shape. (The heat) is not going away down here, so he better get used to it.

"He's an extremely talented kid. He's smart, and he's going to help us win a lot of games. I think after these next couple of days, he'll realize what it takes."

Smith said he suffers from asthma and forgot to take his medicine. Haslett said he was unaware of the player's asthmatic condition.

"If he's got asthma, then he needs to take care of it, because I'm not his damn doctor," Haslett said. "He'll take care of it and he'll be on the field, because I'm not taking care of it. But he better take care of his conditioning also."

Asked if he saw the qualities that justified Smith's first-round selection, Haslett replied: "Most of the time, he was hunched over, so not necessarily. But you can see that he can run and he's got all the physical skills."
