Saints Preseason tests
Preseason does have a lot of value for starters depending on what portions you are looking at.
HoF game was a test to see if Brees/Carmicheal was where the real bond and value is. Taking absolutly nothing away from Sean Payton... he is our Moses... But that first possession looked like mid season last year and I didnt see any cues missed. Jags and Texans will be a real test against good Defenses. Lets watch to see how cohesive we look on offense. Quick observation: Saints in the HoF game was punishment.... Being as how we play AGAIN 3 days later on the E Coast. Did the Saints return to NO or just continue on to NE and practice with the Pats before we play them Thursday... No need to round trip that crap. Patriots: This will be the first true test of our secondary.. albeit with out our starting CBs. This is the first great QB we will face in preseason. Jaguars: This will test our offense,,, great defense last year and it will also test our LB's and front 4... MJD will be the first real back we face. Texans: A test of our defense as a whole... between Schaub airing it out and Foster on the ground we will see how well Spag's is getting things tightened up. Also another test of Brees/Carmicheal as Houston had a hell of a defense last season. Titans: Starters will probably play an entire half... Now we get to see if they get their rhythm on Offense and can interrupt the rhythm of an opposing Defense... Its all elementary but that is what preseason is for... 10% of the game is to test starters and the rest is for 2nd and 3rd stringers to showcase their talents. Discuss? Some of you know a lot more about our opponents than I do. |

I wouldn't worry to much about having to face MJD. He's holding out.

Does Tom Brady still sport long hair? If so, this could pose additional concerns for us!

This is still preseason where the real tests are for the players we'll never see again. All the smart coaches'll be keeping their cards close to the their chests. We won't see many fireworks yet.

Being able to preform the elementary and mundane can be a test... These upcoming four games are where we work out the kinks. NFC south is going to be fairly strong this season and we can ill afford to drop even one because something has not been ironed out yet. |

NE should be a good test for our backup defensive unit. Hoyer and Mallet can fling the rock around.

The Patriots preseason game from a couple of years ago was pretty chippy, as I recall. Morstead got hurt being the hero on a meaningless punt return. I wonder if Payton being out affects the dynamic. I know if Payton were there, he and Belichick would be constantly playing gentlemanly invisible Jedi mind tricks on each other all night.
I think Belichick is actually going to HELP the Saints the most, since he and Payton respect each other. I feel like that game will probably be the most like a scrimmage; I think the two coaches may actually collude and discuss plays, schemes, what they are going to want to do, beforehand. Each will want to look at specific things on each of their teams. Belichick has said some things in the press, that make me think he likes and respects Payton and the Saints, and I think he actually wants Vitt and the crew to succeed. |
