Saints owner Tom Benson spent this morning meeting and discussing his team's embattled off-season with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. |

|
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
Pick a car Roger... any car...
|
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
I will take back almost everything I've ever said against Benson if I find out he gave Goodell the business during their meeting.
BUT, if he just sat there, smiled and took any sort of smack from ol' Rog, I am doubling up. (as if he's worried about me at all) |
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
Not sure old Tom is the right man for the job...
Rita could have gone all batchit crazy on him and scared Goodell into submission. |
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson spent Tuesday morning discussing his team's embattled offseason with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a meeting, according to league sources.
Saints Bounty Scandal An NFL investigation found the New Orleans Saints operated a bounty system rewarding between 22 and 27 players for hard hits and injuring opposing players. Profile » Benson wanted to address the manner in which his team has been treated for its role in an alleged bounty program, at a time when a Louisiana judge is waiting to rule on linebacker Jonathan Vilma's lawsuit against the league, the sources said. What came out of the meeting is uncertain, but it now has wrapped up, one source confirmed. The two sides had been working on planning this meeting for a while, and they attempted to get it done last week, before the two sides' busy schedules interfered. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to confirm the commissioner's meeting with Benson and added that Goodell meets and talks with owners all the time on a wide range of issues. Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
Mike Freeman of CBS Sports "reported"
But I'm told by a source the meeting was "civil but passionate" and Benson aired all of his concerns about the Saints' bounty situation. Goodell meeting with Benson 'civil but passionate' - CBSSports.com |

Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
Ya'll aren't giving Old Man Benson enough credit with the used car jokes, that was years ago -- he is one of the most respected and well-liked owners out there. The other owners love him. If he can get a few owners to turn on Goodell, and peel off six or eight or ten of them in their support for Goodell, especially if some of them are influential, highly respected NFL owners that the others look up to, well he could pivot this thing on a dime and really get some results.
I think this is Benson lobbying and saying, "okay, Roger, you have stretched the facts about what we both know happened, and you've said a bunch of *** about my team, and you better have written a check with your words that your --- can cash, because if your statements come back NSF in court with Vilma then I will personally call in the other owners in for a vote and they will BURY you." |
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
so when are we going to hear about what happened?????
too much suspense |
Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
Can't see how this could be bad for us in any way. I think the main topic had to be Vilma since his case has really built up some momentum.
I hope Benson was ultra-diplomatic and gave RG a way to save face while reducing the penalties. No way RG comes out and just says he was wrong. |

Re: Benson meeting with Goodell...
I'm sorry ya'll I think this story has legs, or at least could have legs.
I believe it's tied to the B.S. ESPN wiretap story that got busted yesterday. [NOTE: THIS IS ALL SPECULATION AND MY GUESSING] Benson MAY have had his attorney contact ESPN discussing slander of the Saints over that story. ESPN may have told Benson "look the NFL front office told us to run anything against you guys." Think about it...... Remember, Roger Goodell serves at the owners request. 32 owners are Goodell's boss. And many of you may not remember but Tom Benson had the gazoongaz to go on live TV in New Orleans, during the news, to tell the entire city of NOLA WE sucked because they weren't selling out the SuperDome fast enough (The Dome was selling out but not until preseason started). He then threatened to move the team. The guy had the ballz to blame it all on the people, the City, and State, and not via press release, on live TV. |

Benson Meets with Goodell in NYC
1 Attachment(s)
METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in New York to discuss matters concerning both the team and the league.
While the NFL and the Saints are providing very few details, Saints spokesman Greg Bensel says the meeting was productive and that Benson looks forward to many more discussions with the commissioner. You know, Benson would kind of intimidate me in an office. I met him at training camp and he almost ran me over in a golf cart, and he seemed a bit startled, and kind looked at me like I was going to carjack him, but in suits, office, office tower setting--- I think he might be a little scary. Benson Meets with Goodell on New Orleans Saints Mistreatment: Fan Reaction - Yahoo! Sports As much as the gridlock of American politics aggravates me, Roger Goodell is a clear example of why a dictatorship would be far worse. Thus far, the NFL's only defense in Vilma's court case has been that the CBA grants Goodell autonomy in these matters. But does the CBA give him the right to levy any penalty he wants to? Tom Benson met with Goodell at a time when one must wonder how much more criticism he can handle. Benson's meeting may convince Goodell to drop the Saints player suspensions before Judge Berrigan embarrasses the NFL in court. I honestly don't think Roger Goodell knew what he was getting himself into. Like everyone in New Orleans, Tom Benson is a fighter. New Orleans withstood much worse than this in 2005 and came back even stronger. Benson and the Saints may be on the verge of a bigger victory than Super Bowl 44. |

With the insurance company bailed on Roger, things seems even more interesting. I wonder if the owners would consider making roger the fall guy in some kind of deal to accommodate the player lawsuits...
Yeah, I'm dreaming, and I usually dream of Zooey, but she's knows I'm passionate on this particular issue so she's cool with it... |
