Yep on the DItka thing.... until the Ricky Williams draft

I thought we'd go undefeated last year.

I thought Gregg Williams was the greatest thing since fried chicken. Kicking myself....kicking myself....kicking....

I still think Bum Phillips was the most entertaining coach we've ever had.

I thought Hank Stram was a pretty natty dresser.

I wanted the Saints to draft Vince Young (Though I was satisfied after they signed Brees).
I thought firing Randy Mueller was one of the worst mistakes in team history.
I thought the Saints "settled" on Sean Payton.
I hated the Deuce pick with every fiber of my being.
I once believed that 8-8 was an incredible achievement... Until the '00 season (and boy that didn't last long either).

For what its worth, heres my 5:

1. I just knew we were gonna make the playoffs in '79. Our offense was hot and Dick Nolan seemed to know what he was doing.

2. I thought A. Brooks was gonna do great things.

3. I, like so many others, thought Ditka was gonna turn us into a winner.

4. I thought the Erxleben pick made sense.

5. I didn't think Sean Payton was going to get us anywhere.

Now for a couple of side notes:

1. I knew the Deuce pick was gonna be great for us. I watched him closely when he was at Ole Miss and knew he was something special.

2. I hated Bum Phillips from the minute he traded Archie and refused to watch the Saints again until after he was fired.

LOL - I was a Banquet Chef in K.C. during the Schotzenslut days. I fed the teams who played the Chiefs during that time.

Marty would show up in the lounge of the visiting team's hotel (MARRIOTT OVERLAND PARK) and try to pick up chicks. NO SHAT. My wife (at the time) was a cocktail waitress.

Another NO SHATTER - So my wife waits on Jake Plummer and some hooker and he's trying to impress her at the end of the night and my woman asks who 's room the bill will go to... ---- well, she has no idea who Jake Plummer is... so he's GROPING this girl and pauses to say, "Plummer's room". My wife breaks out in laughter at him and says, "ARE YOU ***IN' SERIOUS?" LOL "WHO'S THE PLUMMER?".

He compained, and she ALMOST LOST HER JOB OVER THAT ONE... LOLOOLOOLLOOLLLL

Ah, ***it I'm on a roll...

So the Eagles are in town, right, and they are ordering 3 pizzas per room every hour for like ten hours... the fat ***s.

It overwhelmed us and crushed the morale of our kitchen...
So... In an advance, pre-check-in meeting with trainers concerning the team's nutritional needs, they had said that they ABSOLUTELY wanted nothing to do with CORN products. "Why?" Because it makes you full and want to shat, that's why.

After being buried that night by the Eagles' pizza orders, I mixed up some cornmeal (finely-ground) waffle batter for tomorrow's waffle "station". (made to order)

Well, they complained of "SOGGY" waffles, but ATE THEM...

The rest was HISTORY...

Chiefs "squeaked" that one out! LOLOOLLLOOLLL

So this one afternoon... The Titans are checking in... All the starters like to use the service elevator (in the kitchen, for room service) for a private elevator...

Here comes the smallest head I've ever seen on a human being... Eddie George, and MY MAN from back in the early '90's, LORENZO NEAL. "LO"

I'm chattin' "LO"'s azz off about how I saw him carry a PILE of Falcons in the Georgia Dome back in (I don't know), '93(?) when I'm sitting right on the FIFTY...

TROPHY George feels like a HEEL. Ignored. We ride up to the 5th floor and I press "CLOSE DOOR" and carry my azz back to work...

MAN... THOSE DAYS...

... those are some great tales, Alaska, ... I wonder how many times you heard this conversation in KC last season:

Asst Coach #1: "Remember that banquet chef who made those corn waffles for the Eagles?"

Asst Coach #2: "Yup"

Asst Coach #1: "Wonder what he's doing now ..."

Asst Coach #2: "Don' know"

Asst Coach #1: "We coulda' used that guy today"

Asst Coach #2: "Yup".

I thought we'd win our first game after that damn kick off return to start it all off.
I thought Dempsey would miss that field goal. Hell we all did.
I thought Archie was the wrong pick. I wanted LSU to re-break his arm during that 63-17 arse whippen we put on them when he was at Ole Miss. Never famous but one of the most loved Saints of all time and he showed me that he had alot of guts and endurance for sure.
I didn't think Payton was going to be a good coach.
I thought that on side kick was stupid. Until we recovered the ball.

Okay, some more:
Still hate the Steelers

Grew up in Browns' country and was born at the tail end of their glory days.

Still don't see Dempsey's half shoe as any kind of advantage. The dude only has half a foot for cryin' out loud!

I knew he was gonna make that kick. I was fourteen at the time and was forever a Saints fan after that.

My dad took me to several doctors after that field goal to see if I could be cured of my Who Dat love. He would've gone as far as electro-shock therapy if my mom hadn't caught him and made him put the extension cord away.

Knew for a fact that Schottenheimer couldn't have won a playoff game, even with the '72 Dolphins. Had myself a couple to celebrate when Payton was picked instead of him.

I am going to roll my Top 5 into 1...

The hiring, (and not firing), of Carl Smith as Offensive Coordinator during the Mora years.

I know the Saints didn't have a lot of offensive firepower back then, but with the Dome Patrol, with a more aggressive OC, the Saints should have, at the least, made it to the divisional or conference round of the playoffs.

I still think a Super Bowl appearance would not have been out of the realm of possibility during that time with that team.

Thought Stallworth was the next Moss
Did not like the signing of SP as head coach (ouch!)
Thought Brooks was going to be a very good QB
Thought Bush would be a superstar (or basically Sproles)
Thought Boo Williams was going to become a good tight end

Hard for me to look at anything before 1970 as well.

Before the merger, I believe it was a much easier time to win titles than when the merge happened.

Just about every team prior to the merger won a title it seems, their was no competition or less of it in that period, especially when you go back before the 1960s.

I thought Mike McCarthy was the worst offensive coordinator ever. What's that say about the qb and offense we had at the time.
I thought Tom Benson would sell the Saints by now.
I thought Jim Mora would be the best coach we would have.
I thought the 2009 NFC Championship game was called by competant refs.
I thought we would have had a second Dome Patrol by now...

1. I never thought anyone would ever replace the Steelers as my favorite team. (It was 1986 when I actually realized Louisiana had a team and I became a Saints fan. I was more of a baseball fan in my early years).

2. I thought Onome Ojo was a steal in the draft.

3. I thought Jim Everett was going to take us to the promised land.

4. I thought Joe Horn was a bad signing.

5. I thought Vaughn Dunbar was going to become the all-time leading rusher in Saints history.

Give five (5) things you said/thought about the Saints that turned out to be nearly the OPPOSITE of what you thought when it was all done.

Please give NO MORE THAN 5 (...give others a chance to add to the list):

My blunders:

1. I thought that Earl Campbell still had a lot left in the tank, and would help make us a playoff contender. (NOT)!!

2. I thought that Mike Ditka would make the Saints a Super Bowl contender within 3 years. (YEAH, RIGHT)!

3. I assumed that Mike McKenzie would be a "locker room cancer" if the Saints picked him up (because of the problems he had with his contract in Green Bay). (OOPS)!

4. I felt that Steve Walsh would be a "gamer." :-P

5. I thought that DeLa Puente was a horrible center, and would not make the team (...way, waaaaaaay off on that one)!

What's your list? Go all the way back to 1967 if you wish. You can also REPEAT something someone else said, but again, please limit it to five (5).

WhoDat!!!!!

1. I was very young, and very pissed when the Saints gave up the pick for Over-the-Hill Earl Campbell; Like my Dad, I knew Bum Phillips was an idiot...

2. Thought Ditka would be interesting, but until the front office was replaced (Bill Kuharich was awful); Buddy D was fun to laugh at, but when you follow his advice - you'd end up broke just like following his tips on the ponies...

3. Was excited to finally, finally have a cornerback - still have nightmares of Toi Cook...

4. Mora wanted Walsh and was more stubborn than Jimmy Johnson who wanted to keep Walsh and send us Aikman; this confirms story confirms Sean Payton as genius...

5. Didn't know where they'd find one, but knew the Saints Coaching Staff would find one despite Loomis screwing up and not finding a FA Center quicker and settling on the aged Kreutz; I was disappointed in Kreutz...

I dunno if anyone ever seen my rants, but this is probably something I learned over many years that I may not regret even though hes now dead.

But I think Buddy D was a complete idiot and probably did more to hurt the Saints than help them.

I can remember plenty times he would defend Aaron Brooks, he lobbied to get Ditka hired as the Head Coach, Ditka is probably one of the worst coaches to ever win a Super Bowl up their with the ranks of Brian Billick and Barry Switzer, I think he was a complete 180 of what was reality, I listen to him on Radio plenty and maybe its no wonder why he ended up on Radio and off of Television, Jim Henderson and Buddy D was polar opposites when it came to Football and knowing the game.

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

1. After going 5-1 during preseason, I thought the Saints were ready for a championship run in '67.

2. I thought Gary Cuozzo was a great acquisition for QB...he ended up getting beat-out by Billy Kilmer.

3. I thought the Saints were crazy for trying a FG against Detroit from 63 yds. out.

4. I thought the Saints had made the playoffs when they went into half with a huge lead against Oakland only to see Stabler enter the game in the 2nd half and erase what was at least a 21 pt lead. Saints lose following week and out of the playoffs.

5. I thought the Saints put themselves in FG range to tie the game against Redskins after Saints QB completed a pass that took them deep into Washington territory late in the game. Dexter Manley, however, spits on Jim Dombrowski, Dumbo retaliates and gets caught, gets a personal foul penalty nullifying the long play...and the Saints lose, lose the next week and miss the playoffs.

For the record...I am going entirely on memory here. I am relatively certain that #4 & #5 happened...I am not sure as to which game it was during the season, but it seems to me that both events happened in the 2nd to last game...and we still could've won to make the playoffs the next game...but we didn't...but I very well may be wrong about which game and how many they had left.

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

Only way I could see Jimmy Johnson wanting to keep Walsh was because Johnson was at Miami coaching Walsh.

When I was talking about Buddy D hurting the Saints more than help them, back in the 1980s, WWLTV did as much to hurt them as well, WWLTV hopped on the Bandwagon of teams winning championships, they drank the Miami koolaid in the 1980s focusing more on teams like Miami and not even look at LSU or Tulane, this is where the Saints organization got the idea to have Steve Walsh much like where the Saints organization got the idea to hire Mike Ditka from Buddy D.

Basically anything WWLTV related going as far back as 2004 has them completely screwing up the Saints.

I never even seen what they were doing with other teams back in the 80s and 90s all that much, just know WWL tried to make Louisiana sports 2nd rate, funny enough I think when WWL was on the Miami bandwagon was the same week the Saints completely blasted and shutout Elway and the Broncos and it got little attention.

1. I thought that Tom Dempsey's field goal would be our lasting greatest accomplishment (at least in my lifetime)

2. I thought Ditka did the right thing when he gave away all of our draft picks for Ricky Williams

3. I thought Mike McCarthy would become our next HC after Haslett

4. I wanted Culpepper over Brees

5. And finally, I thought it was stupid to promote Loomis , a non-football guy, to GM

I started watching football in 99 so my list is more recent.

I thought drafting Deuce was a misstake since we allready had Williams.

I thought Sullivan would tear it up in the middle and not at the buffet table...

I thought Meachem would be a superstar for us.

I didn't think Jahri Evans would amount to much...

There. 'Nuff said.

Totally agreed on this one. Not because of the surgery, but because I used to over-value draft talent. I realize now its a gamble at almost every pick. But I was on the Leinart wagon the whole way.
