The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

OK, folks. This thread is NOT for the faint of heart.

Give five (5) things you said/thought about the Saints that turned out to be nearly the OPPOSITE of what you thought when it was all done.

Please give NO MORE THAN 5 (...give others a chance to add to the list):

My blunders:

1. I thought that Earl Campbell still had a lot left in the tank, and would help make us a playoff contender. (NOT)!!

2. I thought that Mike Ditka would make the Saints a Super Bowl contender within 3 years. (YEAH, RIGHT)!

3. I assumed that Mike McKenzie would be a "locker room cancer" if the Saints picked him up (because of the problems he had with his contract in Green Bay). (OOPS)!

4. I felt that Steve Walsh would be a "gamer." :-P

5. I thought that DeLa Puente was a horrible center, and would not make the team (...way, waaaaaaay off on that one)!

What's your list? Go all the way back to 1967 if you wish. You can also REPEAT something someone else said, but again, please limit it to five (5).

WhoDat!!!!!

I'll keep mine relatively current...

1-I thought Courtney Watson was gonna be the answer at MLB
2-I though Chip Vaughn was gonna stud out
3-I thought Keyou Craver was gonna become a solid starter
4-I thought Olindo Mare was our answer at Kicker.
5-I thought Adrian McPherson would develop better than he did

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

Oh, gosh.
I think I am going to kill your thread right here with one entry, so my apologies :)

1. I thought the Saints should've drafted Matt Leinart instead of signing Drew Brees because I had concerns over his surgically repaired shoulder.

There. 'Nuff said.

I thought Aaron Brooks could be a good QB.
I thought Jim Mora would win a Superbowl.
I thought Drew Brees would stink out the Superdome.
I thought Buddy Dilaberto would live forever.
I thought my cat actually gave a crap about me.

I thought Dale Carter was a good signing.
I thought Sedrick Ellis was going to be a beast.
I thought Reggie Bush was going to be a star.
I thought we overpaid for Drew coming off surgery.
I thought our rebuilding process was going to take longer than it did.

I thought FF's cat liked him too.

I thought Jason David was going to be the answer at CB (Way off on that one)

I thought Usama Young was going to start at CB and be the answer.

I thought Shawn Rogers was going to be a beast

I thought picking up QBs like Danny Wuerfel and Heath Shuler was going to put the Saints in the driver seat.

Was way off base with any of them. I cant remember all that much in the 80s and 90s rather then thinking those Saints teams were good enough to go to the SB but never got close to doing it.

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

This is an awesome thread, I love the honesty I'm seeing.

Mine:

-I thought Darren Sharper was too old and I didn't really completely know who we were getting as a player when he came to the Saints
-I doubted Pierre Thomas his first year or two, just because I was so used to Deuce
- I totally believed and thought Ditka was gonna do really well, like finally winning us a Super Bowl well
- I was ready to declare Jabari Greer a bust, when he got burned on some long game-winning pass against the Redskins in his first year
- I actually kinda gave up on the Saints in the Aaron Brooks/Haslett era, the Jake Delhomme thing. Not gave up on them in my heart, but I was like "Okay, I've seen enough of this to know where this is headed" and just kind of patiently tuned out on Sundays for a couple of years until there was a coaching change (who I knew would then change the QB). I did however just happen to turn on the TV randomly, in the middle of a game, just in time to see the famous backwards pass

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

1. After week 5 of the 1993 season, I thought we were going to go undefeated and win the Superbowl.
2. I hated the Deuce McAllister pick.
3. I thought Ditka was going to take us somewhere nice.
4. I thought Ricky Williams and Reggie Bush were going to kill it.
5. I thought Jonathan Sullivan was a waste of two first round picks. (Turns out "waste" was not a bad enough description.)

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

I thought Jim Everett was a good QB
I thought it would take Sean 5 years to build a winner
I thought Jeff Blake was the answer
I thought Kyle Turley was on crack (turns out it was just weed)
I thought Tracy Porter would retire a Saint

Don't feel bad. In 2005, I got so sick of Aaron Brooks & Jim Haslett that I went temporarily insane, committed BnG boardicide and went turncoat to the Panthers for a season. I even bought a Delhomme Panthers jersey!

Luckily, the Saints FINALLY showed Brooks & Haslett the door following that awful year. And I quietly came crawling back. Still embarrassed about that one, and I don't embarrass easily!

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

I thought PT was glass and would last one season
I wanted Culpepper over Brees
Mike Ditka would lead us to a SB
Danny Wuerffel would be the best QB since Archie
We should not have let Turley or Glover go.

Great thread BTW

6 years ago, I didn't want some cast off coach from the Cowboys.

TheDeuce 08-24-2012 12:18 PM

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

1. I thought PT was a waste of a roster spot (love him now, best RB in the league on screens)
2. I thought Aaron Brooks could get us to the promised land at one point
3. I was legitimately excited about Tebucky Jones
4. I thought Reggie would be a Pro Bowler every year
5. I was on the Jason David bandwagon big time before he actually played haha

lumm0x 08-24-2012 12:19 PM

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

1. I thought Boo Williams would become one of the best TE's in the league
2. Same goes for Cam Cleeland
3. I loved the Wuerffel draft pick thinking this guy is just a winner.
4. After the Mario Bates - Lorenzo Neal fight I couldn't wait til Neal was punted out. Turns out the wrong guy got tossed.
5. Thought Renaldo Turnbull was gonna be the next Reggie White.

Hoping and thinking in regards to the Saints is something I have learned to avoid.

It will be what it will be.

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

I thought the Dome Patrol was strong enough to get us at least TO a Super Bowl.

I thought Morten Andersen would retire a Saint.

I thought Archie would somehow find a way for one of his sons to finish what he helped to start.

I thought we would blow out the Seattle Seahawks and repeat, even with a weak defense and wounded offense.

I thought Mark Ingram would be Rookie of the Year last year.

I thought billy Joe hobert was the qb of the future.

I thought Ricky was worth everything da coach gave up for him

I thought cie grant was bound for stardom (did anyone not fall for that one?)

I thought picking deuce was a total garbage pick and bemoaned it clear up until he broke off that 50 something yard run for a td his rookie year

I thought Joe horn probably wouldn't make the team

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

Well ok... Ill play along:

I thought Seattle would have been crushed.
I thought Tampa bay would have been crushed.
I thought Garrett Hartley would have made a 29 yard field goal.
......

Then I stopped thinking and hoping.

I thought Adrian Arrington was the next marques colston
I thought Jeremy Shockey would tear our locker room up
I thought reggie would finally get it together and put in a 1000 yard season, every year!
I thought Darren sharper would teach roman Harper how to catch
I thought Jason David would eventually become our best cornerback

- I thought Tebucky Jones was a great signing
- I thought the Saints might be in San Antonio or LA by now
- I thought Mickey Loomis would flop as Randy Mueller's successor

- I thought Jim Mora Sr was a cool customer

Really I think Jeff Blake was the answer.

Haslett had a knack for always using the wrong QB.

I don't think it. I know it. I'm simply waiting for proper cosmic karma to present me with my opportunity.

I don't know if I can come up with 5, but here goes:

1) I never thought the Saints would win a SuperBowl, especially after Katrina ... never in a million years ... maybe come close, but never win it all.

2) At first I didn't think it was fair that they let Tom Dempsey kick with that specialized shoe, and then I thought, "eh, what could it hurt?".

Re: The Official: Time to 'fess-up' THREAD...

I feel really good about myself. Cause I actually thought Brees would do great when he came here.

I also never gave up on the saints. Honestly there's a dozen other franchises that have a WAAYYYYYYYYY worse history than us.

Browns
Lions
Eagles
Jets
seahawks
bucs
cardinals

You never hear people talk about how bad the 9ers were in the 70s. Or the steelers in the 60s.

We've had TWO good decades(90s and 2000s and we'll probably have another good one in this decade). Most teams don't have any.

When we go down in history as perhaps the greatest linebacking corps ever? Yes I do. You should too.

We just need to make history. Not win a super bowl.

All 4 LBs on The Dome Patrol was on the team from 1986-1992, after that it went downhill until '06... I don't think of the '90s being that good for us, after '92 we didn't make the playoffs until '00

1. I thought Bobby could beat the Eagles in the playoffs
2. Didn't like the Duece pick
3. I was the driver of the "draft Lianart" bandwagon
4. Thought Rickey would be the greatest running back in team history
5. Thought Ditka would lead the Saints to the Superbowl

Nonetheless That's still a decade.

Maybe I should change that to the (late 80s/early 90s and the 2000s and the coming decade).

That's still 2 more good decades than most franchises.(even if one of those decades was 2 halves put together).

Plus 8 years to reach the playoffs isn't much when you think what the lions have had to go through.

I thought the 67 Saints were going to be a winning team.

I thought Gary Cuozzo was the next Johnny U.

I though Bum Phillips was going to take us to the playoffs.

I thought Larry Burton was the next Bob Hayes.

I thought Bobby Scott would be good if he ever got the chance to play.

(Yeah. I'm old.)

I think its interesting to make a list of how long in terms of years it took for some teams to win a championship.

Steelers took about as long as the Saints did, some teams are waiting longer.

1. I never thought I'd live to see the Saints win a Super Bowl.
2. I thought Wuerffel was going to be a good pro.
3. I thought Stabler had something left.
4. Every year since I was six I thought the Saints had a shot. (42 Years)
5. I thought the "flex" defense was the answer.
