METAIRIE — In the aftermath of the New Orleans Saints’ 62-7 trouncing of the Indianapolis Colts last October, a sobering thought crossed the mind of Saints right tackle Zach Strief.

That evening, in front of a national television audience, Strief feared the Saints let the cat out of the bag in showing that Carmichael was a capable and talented offensive coordinator toiling in the considerable shadow cast by Sean Payton.

With Payton sitting high above the field in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome after undergoing surgery for a fractured leg he suffered one week earlier, Carmichael had, for the first time in his career, the keys to the car in his hands.

He didn’t crash Payton’s sleek offense, which was well on its way to setting an NFL single-season record with 7,474 total yards, and actually kept the play-calling job after Payton returned to the sideline a few weeks later.

“It was one of those deals where Pete was kind of behind the scenes so much because of coach Payton’s ability to call games,” Strief said a few days after the Colts game. “It was awesome to see him step out of the shadows.

“Within NFL circles, I think a lot of people know what kind of coach Pete is,” he added. “But everyone else kind of has this belief that coach Payton is the offensive ‘staff.’ ”

Re: Carmichael showing he can handle New Orleans Saints offense

I actually think Carmichael might secretly be a little more crazy and balls-to-the-wall than even Payton is. Payton always does that gentlemanly, take-a-knee-at-their-20-and-give-them-the-ball-back maneuver to close out games. It's because he has to deal with these other coaches year in and year out, they may even be friends, it's a professional courtesy thing. But Carmichael in that Indianapolis game, he just turned on the jets and let it rip! I think Carmichael and Vitt are just the type of crazy guys to say eff em, eff sportsmanship, eff being polite, who gives a blank, we got this whole entire Dome rocking, let's run up the score on 'em. Throwing the ball, up by 21, going well into the fourth quarter. Like Bellichick just after Spygate. That's what I really want to see.

ME TOO.

I wanna see them really give the 'Clowns (and everybody else) a reason to complain about running up the score.

If you can't stop the Saints offense, don't b*tch to us, b*tch at your defense for not doing their freakin' job

You know, I've never fully understood why people whine so much about running up the score. You don't hold an NFL record by just playing nice.

All these weenies complaining about running up the score just drives me bonkers. The NFL and football in general is all about intimidation, dominance and control of your opponent. This isn't pee wee football nor is it little league, these are grown men and if "running up the score" offends you so much, maybe you should stop watching it and go be a fan of syncronized swimming or ice skating. And to top it off, I never hear the female fans complain about this!
