After having his one-year suspension overturned, Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune expects Jonathan Vilma to be placed on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games.

While it's good news for Vilma that he can resume collecting game checks, there's still no guarantee he'll help the Saints this year. Vilma has undergone three surgeries on his left knee since last November. The 30-year-old didn't participate in any practices or preseason games with the Saints this summer and fall.

Yeah, I wonder why that was the case?!

Awesome news regardless of the fact that it isn't totally over yet. :broccoli:

Just got home and turned on the tv to NFL Net where I had it on this morning. I had no idea about this.
Good NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am watching it as I post. WoW!

I , once again, feel the bounty talk was stupid. Wrong. Penalty , yes, was needed for all. You punish people like these guys where it really hurts and fine them. The suspension punishment was way too extreme and kind of silly.

Things are starting to mighty up in Saintsville.
Our roller coaster ride with the Saints...always :-)

By throwing it right back into Der Kommisar's lap, Vilma's lawyer should immediately throw "Conflict of Īnterest" back at the league.

How can Der Kommisar be unbiased when he is making a decision on a player that filed a lawsuit directly againt him.

Going to find out how good the attorneys really are before this is over. Der Kommisar's best decision could be to recuse himself from the decision process.

I do not want to crap in anyone's cool aid but being back in Rogers hands and "if" (big if) he can find what he needs to reinstate the suspensions.. Its going to be better if they are done now.

I would rather have Smith gone for the first 4 than the following 4

Green Bay/San Diego/Tampa/Denver
Tampa/Denver/Phili/Atlanta
Atlanta/Oakland/San Francisco/Atlanta <-- this might sting the worst.

Yeah, it's not a problem, because Vilma and the Saints re-negotiated his contract earlier in the year and made it consist mostly of bonuses which are guaranteed, so those already counted toward the cap even with the suspension. Vilma's base salary was "only" little less than $2M if I remember correctly, and that is the only thing that will be added to the salary cap.

It's the same with Smith, his re-negotiated contract had only a $800K base salary, so the Saints only have to add $200K to their cap because of him not being suspended for the 4 games.

Now, other things that have affected the reported $8.2M the Saints still had left on the cap are the couple of DB moves they made. Rafael Bush has a $465K cap hit whereas Amaya, who Bush replaced, had a $540K cap hit. And I don't know what Marquis Johnson's cap hit was, but I suspect it was more than the $490K cap hit that Jerome Murphy has. Also, there's the cap hit of Elbert Mack, who was cut to make room for Murphy, before Johnson's injury settlement was announced.

So, all in all, the Saints' cap is looking better than I would've expected with all the moves the FO made this offseason - you gotta love the cap massaging Loomis has done once again.

Yeah, I was just making fun of the report, which made it sound like Vilma had chosen not to take part in the offseason activities with the Saints out of his own volition.

As I understand it, he can't re-frame anything. I understood from the ruling that he cannot bunch up pay for performance and pay to injure in one, so he is now going to have to define the very instances of pay to injure, which would mean not only that the 49,820 slide deck would have to be made public, but his sources as well. He will have to be transparent the next time around.

i think the judge still has to rule on the panel reccomendation by sunday. we will still have to deal with suspensions for having a player pool. but this is a huge step in the truth coming out.
goodell better bring a private chef with him to new orleans or get used to spit in all of his food. he will be hard pressed to get a spit free meal anywhere in the city.

According to the CBA players cannot be suspended for a P4P.

This all happened because of the NFLPA

The coaches are not members of the players association & the NFL does not have stringent rules in dealing with them.

They may be able to go to federal court BUT with the audio from GW I would say the coaches are screwed!!

This conclusion can help Goodell save face, saying he did what he could in the name of player safety, but he will abide by the process set forth by the CBA, all the while avoiding the NFL's "evidence" to be made public, because I firmly believe that the "evidence" either proves all teams had a money pool going, or that the "evidence" is fabricated. Either way, it would be extremely bad for the league.

Goodell was so steadfast that this was it and his decision was made. Fianl. Done. Suspension. Bye.

I agree with you and others.
Soooo, perhaps, reading between the lines, yes, behind closed doors there was most likely more to this story the public will not know about. Sounds like the part of cases where parties settle for disclosed sum, sealed records on things.

P4P is also in exclusive jurisdiction of system arbitration. So RG can NOT under any circumstances (barring the CBA becoming void) rule on that issue. The suspensions have been entirely based on "conduct detrimental" so Goodell can impose the same penalties immediately with "proof" of a bounty scheme.

Thankfully Judge Berrigan has said she will not rule on the case "at this moment" which means that she is probably reserving her ruling on the other case pending Goodell's redetermination. This will hopefully keep Goodell in check as he issues new punishments, but will more likely lead to a settlement on all fronts.

He can call it "conduct detrimental" and issue the same suspensions.

Brennagen can come behind him and say everything was mishandled and vacate everything... But she does. It want to do that.

Re: SUSPENSIONS OVERTURNED

The suspensions of Jonathan Vilma and three other players in the NFL's bounty investigation were lifted Friday by a three-member appeals panel, and the league reinstated those players a few minutes later.

More Bounty Coverage
The return of linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith is a huge victory for the Saints and will be significant on the field, writes Pat Yasinskas. Blog

Linebacker Scott Fujita wasn't with the Browns this week, but he wasn't far away, either. Now, he's back and ready to help the team, writes Paul Kuharsky.
While the ruling allows Saints linebacker Vilma, banned for the 2012 season, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove to play immediately, it does not permanently void their suspensions.

Still, the ruling comes just two days before the first full slate of NFL games this season and is a setback for commissioner Roger Goodell and the league.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Goodell would "make an expedited determination of the discipline imposed" for violating the league's bounty rule.

"Until that determination is made, the four players are reinstated and eligible to play starting this weekend," Aiello said.

Right, but he can no longer simply conflate P4P and pay to injure and call it all "conduct detrimental" he has to specifically prove instances of bounties in order for it to be "conduct detrimental." P4P is the realm of the system arbitration process and Goodell can't talk about it or mention it as part of his new punishments.

Basically the appeals board said: "Breach of contract! try again."
And Judge Berrigan is saying "Put your proof where your mouth is, or I am shoving my judicial size 7s in it."

Typo on the original response. What I meant to type is that he CAN re-frame anything he wants however he wants, but this time around he's going to have prove that indeed a payment was made for injuring a player, and which play/player was, and this time around he's going to have to be transparent about the process, make all of the "evidence" available, allow for cross-examinations of evidence, etc.

Well I suppose one could say things just got more complicated....

At least before we had a good idea of what the turnouts could be.

I am not one who doesn't like closure. I would call Goodell and tell him I wish to serve my suspension now and get or behind me.
