Saints plan to lay it on the line
In the past three years the Saints have invested as many resources on the defensive line as any team in the NFL.
Three of the club's past four No. 1 picks were used to select Charles Grant, Johnathan Sullivan and Will Smith. In February, the Saints designated Darren Howard as a franchise free agent, guaranteeing him a $6.5 million salary. And a few days later they signed free-agent tackle Brian Young to a four-year, $10 million contract. The top eight defensive linemen -- including Smith, once he's signed -- are expected to count more than $14.5 million against the team's $80.5 million salary cap, or about 18 percent of the total annual payroll. It's time for the group to start returning on the investment... For the Rest Click Here: http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index...8606111980.xml |

Warren Sapp; 16 games, 16 tackles, 10 assists, 3 sacks. Jonathan Sullivan; 14 games, 25 tackles, 8 assists, 1 sack. Not a big difference, really. It usually takes DTs a season to just get used to the mayhem of an NFL line of scrimmage, whereas DEs can make an immediate impact if they\'re the speed-rush type by beating OTs wide, out in the clear. |
