Aug. 1 practice... observations.
Here is my take on the practice and it changed my mind on a few players...
Jason Craft, CB this guy should be starting opposite of Fred Thomas. He had a great practice and broke up a couple of passes almost picking one off and stopping Stallworth from bringing in a bomb. Why do they have Ambrose on first team is crazy... he got beat all day and just slow. Start of the season if craft isn't starting we are going to have a long 8-8 season again. Getting him seems to be a good thing. Hell check out CB Maurice Tucker looks good also and I would start him over Ambrose even. Tucker looks as if he can play and had a good practice. Thomas, Craft Tucker and toss a coin for Craver/Brown. If I had to pick the WR's to make the team as of this practice, its... Horn, Stallworth, Pathon, Derrick Lewis (looking great!). The sleeper WR in all this looks to be Nathan Black out of Baton Rouge. Great hands, only WR besides the above to have not dropped a pass and managed to get open. Gardner, whom I was a huge fan of, did not impress me at all... 2 passes dropped and didn't seem to get open as much. Derrick Lewis also showed he has jets. Cook has a ticket waiting for him at Kenner airport to take him home, along with McGeoghan whom I don't think deserves to be a waterboy even. M. Lewis may make the cut but its going to be close. He caught some passes but I don't know if he is making a good impression enough... of course he stands out on punt returns. WOW, our RB's look great also. Lamar Smith running well brook free on a couple of outside tackle runs. Stecker can catch out of the back field and showed some speed and Carter seems also to be getting open and can run. So its a tough spot for the RB's jocking for a spot. Now this Howard Green, DT looks good. I didn't even know his name until today and our front line is going to be great even if we have to use second teamers in there they will get the job done. ITS AMBROSE going to cost us games!!! Getting back to Craft though, he drew cheers the loudest of the day and the most of the day from the crowd. He stood out BIGTIME. We so have to get rid of Ambrose. I am hoping to make it out for Monday afternoon's practice. |

I know you had fun today. It appears from your observation as well as others that Craft and Strecker are going to be a couple of excellent offseason pickups.
I keep hearing about Green and how he is impressing everyone, this is very good news. I think the beerman will make the team as our kick and punt returner if nothing else. I think we will have a great set of receivers whoever they end up to be. Thanks for the post. |

I tend to agree with Craft at number one. Tucker reminds me of GB\'s McKenzie a bit, he showed some hussle and knew where he should be. Ambrose... what a waste!
Oh one more thing I wanted to add and that is TE\'s... WOW Boo seems to be even betterr than last year. He caught a diving pass just before going out of bounds, the best catch all day and looks like he is more of a all-pro WR than a TE. We should have the best tandem TE set in the league. How did Germaine Crowell play? Like I said before D. Lewis is a keeper. Too bad we have to let go someone. (*gone)
1. Joe Horn 2. Donte Stallworth 3. Derrick Lewis 4. Devery Henderson 5. Germaine Crowell or Jerome Pathon *6. Michael Lewis *7. Talman Gardner IMHOP I think M Lewis is gone along with Jerome Pathon ( if Crowel can show that he is reliablel) |

I can only go by what I saw in two practices and I\'d have to say that the sleeper is Henderson... he needs to get in there and get some reps. He is the one who is going to have to beat out M. Lewis the top 4 are:
Horn Stallworth D. Lewis Pathon Pathon is a keeper, he looks as good as D. Lewis. Crowell was ok but he didn\'t stand-out and almost seemed sluggish to me. I don\'t see them keeping more than 6 WR\'s 7 is way pushing it with all the TE\'s in house that are going to be awesome. I\'d say along with the top 4 we are looking at Henderson and M. Lewis making the team. Now unless you go with youth here go with Henderson and gardner but as of now Gardner could be on his way out, dropped a couple of passes and didn\'t show any speed. Henderson to return punts and KO\'s if M. Lewis is cut. [Edited on 3/8/2004 by Euphoria] |

euph...thanks for the great post. Do you by chance remember seeing what Banks (31) at RB looked like (in the mix w/all the other guys having a good camp). There\'s a whole city up here in Iowa wondering : )
