Gumbo,
Think Howard has given any indication outwardly or \"between the lines\" that he would be back next year? Anyone wonder if he has seen the drafting of Will Smith as the writing on the wall as to his future with the team? [Edited on 3/8/2004 by vulture] |

If I were Darren Howard, I would have in the back of my mind that I could be traded. With Will Smith being drafted it COULD be the end of Howard as a Saint next year. On the other hand, if Howard stays healthy, something he\'s had trouble doing, he could have a monster year and someone else could be the odd man out. Or, the Saints might elect to keep all 3 for another year if they have the cap room. My personal opinion is Howard will be traded if Smith shows he can handle the job. |

I will agree, this acquisition of Smith may push Howard out of a job in NO, and that makes me very sad. |

For whatever reason Howard leaves the Saints, The Saints have lost there best Defensive End. There is no way Smith or Grant could touch Howard\'s ability.

Well, if you believe Haslett\'s hype (which is a VERY dangerous thing to do IMO), then you can never have enough d-line talent. That makes it seem that Howard isn\'t going anywhere. Will Smith is not, at this point in his career, an every down DE. He\'s a pass rush specialist. The Saints would be real dumb to dump Howard before they know what Smith is truly capable of. Further, you\'ve got Pat Swilling syndrome. I\'m sure Smith will have a pretty good year in 04. You would too if you had Grant, Howard, and Rodgers next to you.

This is a tough situation, If Will Smith does bad then you have wasted a 1st rounder but then again he fits well as a second stringer. If Smith does great, you can\'t keep 3 top Defensive Ends on a team, there is on two spots, Then again, you will have alot of cap room available when you trade one.
I see Smith doing really well, which means somebody has to go. |

Tap those brakes just a hair, Smith is pretty good against the run. I\'ll give you three guesses as to who he was compared to going into the draft, but you\'ll only need one.

Let me clarify - Smith isn\'t bad against the run - he will be used that way this season (mostly).
In any case, my suggestion is that if Smith really blows up as a rookie that they move Howard to DT, use him at both DT and DE in the rotation (he\'s gotta be Young\'s size right?), and dump Sullivan. It\'s a lot easier to find a big fat guy to fill the middle than it is to find a Darren Howard. Find an absolute stud at MLB (if they don\'t have one already), who can make up for occassionally having to undersized DTs in the game at the same time, and keep your stars. Dump your expensive fat boys (AKA sullivan). |

I don\'t think you\'ve ever met a struggling player you didn\'t want to dump. And they don\'t have to be struggling too much before your trigger finger starts to itch. Keep dogging Sullivan and I\'ll have to take him under my wing like I did Brooks. No one on this board wants to see us battle it out over Sullivan like we did Brooks. Go cool that trigger finger off. :P LMAO.... ;) |

If you had to do it all over again, who would you select with the 6th overall pick- Sullivan or Trufant? |

However, I think Sully has all the skills necessary to be a dominant DT. I am a little worried about his maturity level. He\'s only 15lbs overweight right now. That\'s not really bad. He should have come into camp in better shape. I think the coaching staff might be playing a little with his head trying to motivate him. As camp goes on, I suspect we\'ll start to hear how Sully is really starting to turn it on. Just a hunch. |
