Some surprise cuts coming??
From all I've read and heard about some of our unheralded younsters I believe there will be a few surprises come cut-day.
Steve Gleason-I've read Devron Harper is looking very good at the FS position. He's already a pretty good special teams player so I think he'll take Gleasons spot. Ronny Jenkins/Tavian Banks-I've heard they both look good so far. Jenkins is a special teams beast so I can see him making this team as the Fred McAfee type. He's looked pretty good at RB also. He's another candidate to take Gleasons spot. Jerry Fontenot- I think he gets cut because Nesbit has looked very good so far so we have 3 OL that can play center. I think we only keep 8 OL. There were a few no-names that have also impressed the staff and they could be shuttled to the practice squad for injury insurance. Cutting Fontenot would allow us to keep an extra WR, RB or CB. Willie Whitehead-With Will Smith blowing away everyone, and Tony Bryant and Melvin Williams looking really good, I think Willie gets cut. I don't know how much trade value he brings but I think I'd rather go with the youngsters with upside. I also think there may be some serious trade discussions on... Kenny Smith-He brings the most trade value, and Green and Allen have excelled so far. Jerome Pathon-Talman Gardner is turning it on. He's impressing the coaches daily and could make Pathon expendable. Nathan Black and Derrick Lewis are also having great camps. Needless to say the last cutdown will be very difficult. I'll bet every one of our final (5??) cuts land a job somewhere else. |

Some surprise cuts coming??
Danno --
Yes, I think there will be some surprise cuts this year and I expect some of \'em to land on other rosters. I don\'t look for Fontenot to make the team. It\'s wasted space, IMO. I didn\'t think he played great last year. I know a lot of you disagree with that. I really concetrated on where the pass rush was coming from last year (I\'ve gotta watch out for my man Brooks, you know) and a lot of it come straight up the middle and I saw Fontenot getting pushed back way too much. I think that\'s why Haslett made the change. This year with Bentley and Holland on the field together, I think we can wear a defense out a little more. Get back to a little smash-mouth football. |

Holland was getting beat occasionally in passing plays last year, so don\'t go pinning that on Fontenot. I can watch games from last year too, and Fontenot can get to the second level and lay some wood on running plays. Deuce didn\'t seem to have a problem running towards Fontenot, and letting him guide Deuce through the secondary.

dont count on fontenot not making the team...he was brought back to mentor bentley and just because he cant do it all anymore doesnt mean he doesnt know it all. look for him to be on the roster as well as gleeson.

Hire Fontenot as an assistant coach if he\'s such a good mentor. Nesbit is having too good a camp to cut him. Nesbit and Jacox have both played center in the NFL. And both can play all 3 interior positions well. Unless we keep 9 OL (or we have an injury) Fontenot is gone. |

Danno, could you point me to the report on Will Smith blowing everybody away? I must have missed that somehow. If its true, its certainly good news, but come on, its a little early for all that isn\'t it? |

Fontenot will be on the team one way or the other. Gleason did not help his chances by getting hurt and everyone saying he maybe out 2 to 3 weeks. I think either Banks or Jenkins will make the PS, it all depends who will be more important to the team at the time the decision has to be made. I don\'t think Pathon will be cut, I think we will keep Horn, Stallworth, Pathon, Henderson, D. Lewis and Gardner, Black will make the PS. I think Michael Lewis makes the team as either the six receiver or return specialist, again it depends on who is the most important player at the time the decision is made. I do believe Whitehead will be cut, because the injury has slowed him some and some of our other lineman are finally taking practice seriously.
