If you had to choose..
A trip to the playoffs (possible loss) or the number 1 draft pick which would you choose?
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs.
Get us in the line for the dance, and I'll be we can surprise some people late. Especially if goodell relents and sees that Payton has been being a good boy |

Number 1 draft pick means you 4uck3d off a whole season for a draft pick that was already taken away by Goodell. |
Re: If you had to choose..
Depends, does the senario include a reduction in our head coaches suspension?
If yes, then playoffs. |

Playoffs

Re: If you had to choose..
Are you out of your freaking mind?:p J/K
I'd much rather make the playoffs. Three of the last 4 Superbowl winners barely even made the playoffs. |
Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs, no question. Though I imagine Ditka might take the #1 pick :).

Re: If you had to choose..
Seriously? One is a winner's mentality, one is a loser's mentality.
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Ask me later in the season. There is something to be said about having a bigger group to choose from come draft time.

Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs

Re: If you had to choose..
When worded like that, the obvious answer is playoffs.

Re: If you had to choose..
playoffs..unless we lose next week. Then it becomes draft.
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs 100%, and even if the Saints don't make the playoffs, I'd rather not have them pick first - even if it would mean a great position in the draft, I don't want them to finish with the worst record.

Easy answer, playoffs vs 1st pick in draft is too easy, playoffs without a doubt, even if it's a one and done.

Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs.

Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs. I love watching football in the post season. Especially if we're involved.

I still love Brees and Colston, but there's some decline in the arm strength of Brees and some wearing down in Colston's footsteps...

Re: If you had to choose..
Can anyone name the last early round draft pick we have picked that has met your expectations?

Re: If you had to choose..
[QUOTE=Danno;445646]Assuming 3rd round or earlier (we've had 16 in the Payton era)...
2012-Akiem Hicks (so far) 2011-Cam Jordan, Mark Ingram, Martez Wilson, Johnny Patrick 2010-Patrick Robinson, Jimmy Graham 2008-Tracy Porter 2007-Robert Meachem 2006-Reggie Bush, Roman Harper I bet not many people on this board agree with you and I was referring to rounds 1 & 2. |
Re: If you had to choose..
Playoffs? PLAYOFFS! Are you kidding me? Right now I'd be suprised if we win a game!

There's also a different expectation between a 1st rounder picked 7th overall and a 1st rounder picked 28th overall. I based my rankings on reasonable expectations. Many 1st rounders are busts altogether and out of the league in 3 or 4 years. Every one of ours is playing and contributing, albeit some way more than others. |

Re: If you had to choose..
I'm ready for one of those "late round gems" to be somebody who can play some defense
|
Re: If you had to choose..
So here's another question to choose from: would you rather be 13-3 and have a late 1st round defensive pick who doesn't meet "expectations," or would you rather have a 4-12 record for the next couple years running and pick up a Suh, Albert Haynesworth, Demarcus Ware, Revis style MONSTER playmaker on defense, every year for a couple of years, to build up a dominant Dome Patrol style defense?
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Record does not equal draft success.
Irrelevant question. |
Re: If you had to choose..
But record equals where you pick in the draft, in the first round, so -- I would think it would be kinda somewhat relevant. Since teams with bad records get to pick a bunch of players before teams with good records from the year before, get to pick theirs.
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Your question assumes if you have an early pick, it'll meet expecations and if your team succeeds, your late pick won't meet expectations.
|
Re: If you had to choose..
Well the question assumes that in any given year there are not an endless supply of MONSTER playmaking defensive players available in the world, if that's what a team is looking for, so yes. Do Aldon Smith's grow on trees? If the order that teams pick in makes NO difference, then why do they even bother to have an order. I'm not even talking about teams who routinely make crappy picks when they're in the top of the high rounds, that don't meet expectations, or teams who find gems in the bottom of the first rounds, I get all that.
I'm mainly aiming this at the people on here who want every defensive pick the Saints ever make to turn out like a Ndamukong Suh or Aldon Smith or Demarcus Ware. Players like that don't grow on trees or hang around the parking lot at Home Depot where you can just scoop one up. |

Re: If you had to choose..
As a whole, the Saints' scouting department hasn't really wowed me in recent years. While they do pick up serviceable players on their higher rounds, like Danno pointed out earlier - and I do agree with that list he posted - they haven't been able to pick up guys who would've made a big impact on the defensive side of the ball.
Now, I don't know what the make up of the scouting department is exactly - and don't care to know for that matter - but it seems to me that they've had more success in picking up quality players on the latter rounds of the draft and as UDFA than they've had with the higher round picks, relatively speaking of course. Maybe Spags will be able to get across to the scouting department what type of players he is looking for and needs in order to make his scheme work, and hopefully that'll result in more successful defensive picks in the coming drafts - because I do hope that Spags will be the DC for the Saints for many seasons to come. |
Re: If you had to choose..
ask the '80 Raiders, the '79 Rams, and the '05 Steelers that question.
