Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

1 Attachment(s)
In a move that will make the ultimate discipline applied to the players involved in the Saints bounty case even stronger, Commissioner Roger Goodell has recused himself from Tuesday’s appeal hearing.

The announcement came from NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith on Twitter.

Per Smith, Goodell will hand the baton to former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Couldn't stand the heat huh Rog?

Tagliabue is a good man with character unlike Godhell. If not for him then we'd be in San Antonio.

Down to proof or no proof. Then fallout from the implosion.

True, but, I doubt he's going to come in and do anything to make Roger look bad. They have the same loyalty to "The Shield".

I don't know about that. Is it really Godell that makes this move or is it the owners?

I am atleast hoping this will lead to reduced suspensions.

Good question. And now that I've thought about it a little more, Tags can come in and do whatever settles this so Roger doesn't have to admit to being wrong.

Can Tagliabue finish the season as interm commissioner?

Hopefully Tagilabue has more common sense and intelligence then Goddell does.

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

The NFL wants to be able to tell the judge that Roger wasn't involved.

Quote:

See, Judge, we did what the players wanted and brought in someone else.
That's it. That's all. As soon as Tags upholds Roger's silliness (remember Tags trained Roger) the next move will be on the Judge. Pure manipulation by the NFL as they continue to attempt to protect Cerullo - because that's the end game. If he's ever made available, the whole thing falls like a house of cards. Every player in this game knows this.

For those who think Tags will rubber stamp Goodell, forget it. Known him more than 25 years. No longer works for owners. His own man.

I thought that was interesting when I saw it.....

Oh boy, the pendulum swings a little bit more in our direction!! First the news about Reggie White's pay for performance program being allowed and then the Vikings "whistleblower" flat-out calling Goodell a liar... The house of cards is falling Roger!

Did RG actually "recuse" himself, or was he "recused" by the owners?

ChrisXVI 10-19-2012 03:28 PM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

Either way is fine with me. But if he was recused by the owners then it makes me think the owners are a little fed up with Goodell bungling this whole thing.

This is exactly what I suspected the minute I heard it. Don't think that Kennedy's accusations of lying didn't have anything to do with it.

I think they are a LOT fed up with his bungling.

When is this hearing?

TXGSP 10-19-2012 04:18 PM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

At this point Tags could reverse the decision to make Williams & Cerello available for the appeal...should be an interesting time between now and the appeal.

If that decision is not reversed, the process is still flawed and could still play out in the courtroom.

Still doesn't have any effect on the defamation lawsuit

October 30th. That gives another week for Smith and Vilma.

Dog and pony show IMO.

Why would Tagliabue be "selected" objectively by the same man who has obviously misled the players since day one?

Perhaps the owners informed Goodell of whom he was going to name when they recused his sorry ass.

This is going to get VERY interesting!! At this point everything that Goodell has said is the main proof of a bounty program has been discredited (i.e. Hargrove saying "Give me my money" and Kennedy being the "whistleblower" and now saying that Goodell is a liar.) Unfortunately there is no coaches union so even if the player suspensions are completely overturned... Sean will still be suspened : (

I'm afraid your right. But this could be a good thing still

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

I wouldn't count Tom & Rita out of the equation, especially if all the evidence against the players is determined to be BOGUS in the player's appeal. Tags will have to release the same type of press release regarding the appeal decision due to the high visibility.

Nothing stops them from bringing this up again...even with no avenue for SP to pursue.

Both may just wind up in NY "meeting" with Goofball.

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

What I don't get is if this proves to be based on lies... Why couldn't Sean Payton come back? If this is all bull**** why was he suspended?

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

I think what this is going to do is sweep this whole thing under the rug finally.

instead of Goodell admitting wrong doing, hes going to have Tagliabue put it to rest and find all the players innocent.

Goodell is trying to protect his image as much as possible, whatever is left to protect.

i'm so confused, no proof from the start, a sham from the start. roger's weiner gets caught in his skirt. made for tv movie later. book deals later for goodel, he won't need a job

saintfan 10-19-2012 10:48 PM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

Here's what I think - and I hope I'm wrong:

Tags is going to completely or mostly fall in line with Roger. The NFL knows the players are pushing to get this to court. The NFL knows the judge already said she wanted the players to follow the league's process completely.

This is all about the NFL telling the judge it gave in to the players, assigned an 'independent' person to hold the appeals, and believes it has acted in good faith. It's a tactic build around the ability to make that statement to the judge and KEEP THIS OUT OF COURT. The NFL is well aware it's in deep doo doo if this gets beyond the CBA.

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

Time to step aside Roger and let someone who actually protected the shield show you how it's done. You work with the Union, you question decesions of the owners and you don't hide behind extra bodyguards and lawyers.

Look, after owners meetings.... it's obvious A DEAL HAS BEEN STRUCK!

But don't think the owners will go down without a fight. Probably ordered Tags to put a lite sentence and commute that time for time-servered.

That still doesn't give US (the fans) was we demand.

WE WANT OUR COACH BACK!

HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!

THIS IS ALL A BUNCH OF B.S.

WE WANT OUR COACH BACK!!!

Beastmode 10-19-2012 11:16 PM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

I think coach is coming back. The owners are livid with Roger. They likely agreed to the punishments but that was going off of what they believed to be hard evidence. None of it materialized. The Saints did something illegal but not to the extent Roger claimed. Enough is enough. These coaches and players have paid the price and some.

Saintswrath 10-19-2012 11:50 PM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

This directly followed the Kennedy "Liar" articles, I think Goodell's case is falling to pieces and the League has asked Goodell to step aside, i don't think Goodell had much of a say-so anymore after Kennedy came out of no-where and started belittling the league and Goodell against their claims he was a main part of their scandal unraveling.

TXGSP 10-20-2012 12:03 AM

Re: Goodell recuses himself from bounty appeal hearing

Appears like at least one article is stating TAGS appointment is as bad for the league as GoofBall.

Writer states Tags should recuse himself due to his past with teh league to avoid any possible view of collusion...or under the table deal.

Appointing Paul Tagliabue to hear Saints' appeals won't help Roger Goodell or the NFL - Yahoo! Sports

I think he's a ****ing coward. He's made this mess, and now he's letting someone else clean it up. What a piece of ****!
Damn I wish I had money to buy a Supebowl ticket. I would love to be in that dome when when Goodell walks out on the field...if he lasts that long.
