Drew Brees and Peyton Manning won't be the only two historically-elite players on the field in Sunday night's game between the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos. In fact, when it comes to all-time NFL rankings, Saints punter Thomas Morstead has a leg up on both of them.
Morstead is currently on pace to set NFL records for the best net punting average in a single season (44.88 yards per kick) and in a career (39.9 yards per kick) -- though he needs 64 more punts to officially qualify for the career mark. Re: New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead in rare air -- just like his kicks: First-and-10
He was very close to being best in the league last year, but the guy from San Fran beat him out by just a hair.
I remember before the playoff game, some wine-and-cheese San Fran fan was in here, lecturing us about the importance of punting, and how great their newly acquired freaking All Pro punter was, how field position was going to hurt Drew and hurt the Saints' offense...this guy was in here "schooling us" on the art of punting, like as if we had never heard of the freaking punt before. I looked it up and their SF dude was like, barely two tenths of one percent above Morstead, just a tiny negligible difference. So I threw that stat back in his face and was like, "we've been doing this and leading the league for three freaking years. And we have more drives of 80+ yards than any other offense this year. Punt to us to your heart's content." And that guy had never even heard of Morstead, of course. Didn't win the game, but we still ended up scoring the most points against them in that game that anyone did all season long -- so much for field position, and their vaunted punter holding us back. Didn't seem to phase Drew one bit. |
