METAIRIE, La. — For nearly 20 minutes in the Saints’ win over Tampa Bay, New Orleans’ offense looked familiar.
It moved the ball at will, scoring on two 80-yard drives, one of 79 and another 72-yarder. They encompassed 31 plays and 12 minutes, 26 seconds of clock time. The 28 points in that stretch was the longest one of the season in which the Saints (2-4) were on track and on schedule on offense. “We’re getting there,” right tackle Zach Strief said. “I think you see every game, you see periods of it. The periods are getting longer. We’re able to sustain it a little bit. I think more than anything we’re getting some confidence. I think that that’s showing.” Sunday against Denver (3-3) in a 7:30 p.m. nationally-televised affair, New Orleans will try to improve the offense even more. The trend already has been there this season through six games. Read more: Saints offense beginning to click, but problems not totally solved | wwltv.com New Orleans |

They looked much more like the Saints we've seen since Payton arrived. Fewer drops and penalties. Now if we could just get a running game going we could eat up the clock when we want to. We need to keep the defense off the field. Peyton runs a no huddle as good as anybody and he's going to be running it all night.

They were on fire, basically able to score at will, whenever they felt like it, but then Carmichael took their foot OFF THE GAS and that's when the problems started. The minute they went conservative instead of all-out, that's when the offense stalled out and Tampa Bay started creeping back into it. They need to just pull out the stops and let it rip, let Drew throw the rock around, go for broke, not hold anything back. No more of this going conservative with a 14 point lead, not with this defense. No lead is safe with this defense, the offense needs to play 60 minutes all out, full bore, Saints ball, as if their lives depended on it. If Payton were here, I say no way they would take their foot off the gas in the second half like that.

It's like I've always said. It doesn't matter how many yards you get per carry as long as you force the other team to respect the fact that you're going to run the ball, and if they don't respect that, you'll gash them for bigger gains. When you do that it makes your play action game blow up.

I think it is an addition to the coaches rather than a swap, tho. It's not like if Kromer is figuring out something that worked, he is suddenly not there in the room anymore...everyone can contribute and it's one coach closer to a full deck. That can only be good, IMHO.
