Jon Gruden

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Still shocked at the NFL voiding Sean Payton's contract. Now the Saints have said they plan to re-sign him, which there is no reason to doubt they will. However, if the Saints don't get it done and Payton moves on, ...

Still shocked at the NFL voiding Sean Payton's contract. Now the Saints have said they plan to re-sign him, which there is no reason to doubt they will. However, if the Saints don't get it done and Payton moves on, the ONLY logical choice for a replacement would be Jon Gruden. He's hung around Saints camp a few times and seems to have good relationship with both Payton and Brees. I think he and Brees would make just as good a team as Payton and Brees have been. Hopefully it won't come to that, but again we don't know what will happen.

Gruden has himself ensconced in a really good place. Fat contract doing MNF. I can't see him leaving the booth. Its lots of fun for him, you can tell hes enjoying it immensely. No way he goes back to coaching.

What coach WOULDN'T want to coach the Saints?

The offense is pretty much set for the next few years.

Shore up the defense and you have a Super Bowl contending team for years to come!

I agree. Plus, SP IS coming back, so it's a moot point.

Re: Jon Gruden

With the Bucs, Gruden was barely over .500... Take out his first year with Dungy's 12-4 SB team and he's under .500 with that team. We don't need Gruden, we need a good coach.

I tend to agree however, he never really did have much offensive talent to work with and thats his M O. Anyway I would rather a coach like Cowher. If he is ready to come back. I did read somewhere that he has been talking to assistants around the league about possibly coaching under him if he went back. I have a feeling he may wind up in college.

Re: Jon Gruden

First of all, I doubt Tom Benson will let Sean Payton get away. Benson has already gone on record saying he will make Payton the highest paid coach in the NFL.

Now for the sake of this post, lets just say for some reason Payton moves on. Gruden would be a very decent replacement, but maybe not the best option. But a veteran head coach would probably make the most sense. Gotta look at guys like Bill Cowher, Andy Reid if his time is up in Philly, and perhaps Mike Holgrem. If the Saints decide to keep it in house, then to me obviously Aaron Kromer should get the job. I know a lot of you are not Kromer fans, but I see him as a guy who will eventually be a full time head coach in the NFL and roll for 10 years plus.
