Saints knock Falcons from unbeaten perch with 31-27 victory
NEW ORLEANS — Saints cornerback Jabari Greer slightly trailed Atlanta’s Roddy White in the end zone, handing Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan the opening he thought he needed to sink New Orleans’ season.
Instead, Greer dove at the last second, batting away the pass with his left hand and sending the more than 73,000 fans in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome into delirium. The Saints defeated the Falcons 31-27 on Sunday, knocking Atlanta from its unbeaten perch and handing New Orleans its fourth win in five games. The defense held Atlanta (8-1) to just 46 yards rushing, but allowed Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to throw for nearly 399 yards and three touchdowns. But when New Orleans (4-5) needed the defense the most, it came through. Up by four with 5:54 to play, New Orleans’ defense allowed the Falcons to drive to the 1-yard line.
