The Saints have been on pace to set an NFL record for most yards allowed. That honor currently goes to the Baltimore Colts in 1981, who allowed 6,793 yards.
The defense played some of its best football in November, giving up 375 yards against the San Francisco 49ers (8-3-1) and only 293 yards to the Atlanta Falcons (11-1). The 49ers and Falcons are the 11th and ninth ranked offenses in the NFL this season, respectively. The Saints' defense still leads the NFL in yards allowed (440.5 yards-per-game) by a sizable margin but have averaged only 329 yards in their last two games and 353 yards in the previous three contests. If the Saints stay on pace with their season average in the next four games, they'll end up with 7,048 total yards allowed and smash the current record. However, if the Saints stay on their current pace of 353 yards, they'll end up with 6,698 for the season, which would rank No. 2 all-time. They need to allow fewer than 377 yards per game to avoid landing the No. 1 spot. NOLA.COM |

Re: Saints defense has chance to escape unwanted NFL record
In my honest opinion...
Any team that plays us and ends up with some sort of a record either team or NFL this season should have an asterisk by it. Record xxxx *(given by Roger Goodell) |

I don't think that record stands for much.
I don't care about giving up yards if the team is able to make stands in the red zone.Look at the packers D last year,it was poor in yards but was doing well in creating turnovers.I know we are not getting enough turnovers but with good scouting in the draft that could change. |

Re: Saints defense has chance to escape unwanted NFL record
I certainly DON'T want the team to lose and DON'T want to keep enduring this mess of a defense (which is getting better), but part of me secretly wants them to get it, to break the record for ALL TIME WORST, just because it is a pretty hilarious record to have, and it would be pretty amazing if it was "achieved" (and I use that word grudgingly) back-to-back with the record for the most prolific passing record on offense the year before. This team is "exceptional," in the way that all little kids on the playground are exceptional...some are just exceptional in different ways

Re: Saints defense has chance to escape unwanted NFL record
yards are meaningless.
Points are everything. This is not the worst defense of all time. Not by a long shot, especially since Brees throws pick-6s that count against the defense numbers. |

That yardage is not rushing or receiving. |

Re: Saints defense has chance to escape unwanted NFL record
The Saints have given up 327 total points in the 12 games 2012. That's an average of 27.3 points per game. In the Stats published by NFL.com and ESPN.com, those numbers are exactly attributed to the defense.
This means that Brees pick-6s are counted against the defense. If you want to know how, it's math based on definitions. If you wish to complain, the NFL guide is NFL Digest of Rules |

Re: Saints defense has chance to escape unwanted NFL record
The defense may have gave up all the yards in the world, but they certainly aren't to blame for the last two losses
I hope this is a sign that the defense will continue to improve |
