#57

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; nope, Danno. Some numbers are sacred. Like 714. I can see, since there are only so many 2-digit numbers why you cant retire them. But I dont think anyone should get 57 for a good long time on our team. ...

Maybe allow one # to be retired per team, and ours would be #8.

The Cowboys did a pretty smart thing with that Ring of Honor. That way they didnt have to retire all those numbers, but they had, if you remember, retired Drew Pearson's #88, until Michael Irvin came along, and Pearson said it was ok for him to wear it. Then Irvin, of course embarrassed the Cowboys, Pearson's number, and the whole NFL with his coke & "self employed models" birthday party. Im not judgy, and certainly cant hate someone for making a mistake, but it was Irvin's behavior in court and the media afterwards that I found so offputting. But thats another thread.

Joe Boudreaux, or Hawthorne, of whoever, should not be wearing Ricky's number. Unless he's Lawrence Taylor. (on the field) Someone on the team should tell him and help him understand. I can understand totally, if he doesnt understand now, but someone on the team should gather some video, memorabilia, etc, and explain it. I'll bet he'd get it.

Nope, I disagree. Its hero worship gone too far. Maybe we should ban the name Jackson, Mills, Roaf, Manning and Brees from being printed on the back of player jerseys?

Maybe we should ban the 3-4 defense since we were one of the best ever?

This jersey number idolizing is a bunch of crap. Hang the dude's Jersey and name on the dome wall and be done with it. As much as we all hate the Cowboys the ring of honor idea is pretty good.

You don't retire #57 without retiring #8, or #51, or #26, #77, #46, #19, #56, and #7.

It could certainly creat a dilemma after years of great players.

Maybe he wanted to wear that number because of the history behind it and the men that have carried it before him?! Who knows, maybe Jackson was/is Hawthorne's idol, and wearing "his" number could be him paying homage to him?!

Anyway, I don't think retiring numbers is something that should be done in the NFL, since you can run out of numbers fairly quickly if you do that with any type of regularity. It works for hockey, but not for a sport with 53 men teams.
