Also, let's not forget that unfurling a banner right before the game will absolutely make the crowd like 2000% louder than just announcing a certain player's number is retired over the PA. Something about dropping a banner just really gets to people emotionally. Compare the crowd reaction to a divisional or championship banner drop --people go ape for it - to when they announce people into the Saints Hall of Fame --they only get a smattering of applause.
