this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I ask this question because its bothering me a lot. If Brees had SP in San Diego would he have been a top qb before 06? Because I wish I could figure out how some qbs do well too quick ...

Did Brees not have good coaching in SD?
I ask this question because its bothering me a lot. If Brees had SP in San Diego would he have been a top qb before 06? Because I wish I could figure out how some qbs do well too quick and Brees had to wait five years before becoming a big deal. I mean I'm just annoyed that another qb has two rings and half his career so far was potentially wasted due to LT taking all the attention in SD and not giving him much opportunities to succeed.

Rivers had a year where he snuck up on people but he did not play great in 06. That was LT's year. Rivers got better when Norv came along and VJac. I just feel like Brees should have more than 1 ring by now.

Brees was good in San Diego, even went to a pro bowl representing the AFC. But, he never put up big numbers because of LT and their offensive scheme. They were a conservative, run-first, west coast offense. SP coaches more of a vertical offense.

Its hard to believe San Diego in the early 2000s never went anywhere.
I believe though a couple factors grounded that idea. #1 Coaching in SD was lack luster. #2 Spygate Patriots which cheated many teams in this period, cheated San Diego and Indy a good bit in this time. |

Re: Did Brees not have good coaching in SD?
Epic QB takes more than a good QB and a good HC.... It takes an Owner that is hands off (Jerry Jones), a line that can block for the QB, a stable of good sound consistent receivers, a running game that opens up the pass, a defense that allows a running game to happen....

SD is the farm club for the league. They draft good talent but give it all away.

Brees had horrible coaching with the Chargers compared to what he has had with the Saints. Here the system is tailored around his specific skillset which shows by the results. He has passed for more than 32,000yds since joining us back in '06 out of a career total of 45,000yds.

Re: Did Brees not have good coaching in SD?
I don't think he had very good coaching in San Diego, or at least nothing exceptional to write home about.
But here is what I believe to be the key. All Drew's life he has had the chip on his shoulder, he has been under estimated, told he can't do this or that, he'll never make it -- they keep wanting to take that inch away from his height, and write him down on the chart as being 5'11 instead of 6'0, LOL. But it's true. He's been battling that feeling forever, since playing sports in high school. (Even getting picked on as a kid for the mole, wonder what those classmates who teased him are thinking about now that he's got his $100 million, LOL.) And Sean Payton has tapped into that riff, and made it part of the team's whole identity. It's a perfect fit. Payton zeros in on that part of Drew's psyche to motivate him and the team, to say to Drew YES you are THAT GUY for us, and THAT is what makes the offense work unbelievably well and the record books get blown out the wazooo. You take that feeling away, and Drew is back to 8-8 again just like in San Diego. Even running the same plays, same coordinators as when he was 13-3. It's just not the same. So in that sense, I don't think San Diego knew "who" Drew was or how to get the best out of him. So that part -- the motivational or psychological part of coaching, not necessarily the X's and O's -- there's no question Drew had bad coaching in San Diego. |

Re: Did Brees not have good coaching in SD?
He was starting to do well in San Diego, but as said, they were just evolving out of "Marty-ball" and opening up the offense. When Brees suffered the season ending shoulder injury the prognosis wasn't good. The new regime drafted their guy and that left Brees the odd man out. He definitely could have evolved under Turner with the weapons around him. I'm just glad he came here and did it here instead.
