New Orleans
We hear this could be a make-or-break year for WR-RS Michael Lewis. Lewis, who earned a Pro Bowl berth as a returner in 2002, suffered through a shaky 2003 campaign as he struggled with injuries and the fact that teams were kicking away from him. His punt-return average dropped from 14.2 yards to 9.2 yards, and his kickoff-return average dipped from 25.8 yards to 23.7 yards. He also returned 25 fewer kickoffs last season and seemed to lose his air of danger. Sources say the arrival of WR Devery Henderson could spell the beginning of the end for Lewis in the Big Easy. Neither player figures to crack the rotation as a wide receiver, and they basically are the same player in every facet of the game. One huge difference is that Lewis is 32, while Henderson is a 22-year-old rookie. In other words, if Lewis doesn’t return to Pro Bowl form, he could be out of a job next season. |
