Luck played a huge role.
Hell, even Tulane could win if they had 35 turnovers every year.
I don't think it was the turn overs. The Saints only had 9 interceptions that season. Lowest number in the NFL. They were in the bottom third of the league in total turnovers that season.

We actually had 1 more turn over this year than we did that season.

They had an int in just about every game.

2010

Long thread. westbankdaze said that the Saints defense has been bad every year for the last 4 years except 2010 (Saints were the 4th best that season in yards allowed) and he didn't know why the defense seemed to click that year.

The Saints' famous run in 2009 will forever be stamped by Tracy Porter's clutch interceptions in the NFC championship and Super Bowl XLIV, but sometimes lost in the glory of those plays was New Orleans' postseason turnover margin that year: plus 7.

What's more, that came after a regular season in which they had a remarkable 38 takeaways.

So we had 38 in the reg season and 7 in the playoffs.
THAT is what played a huge part in our success that year.
I think there is a little confusion on years here. Yes 2009 the superbowl year we had 41 turnovers 26 ints but 2010 we actually gave up fewer yards and only had 9 ints but 34 total turnovers. The major difference is turnover ratio. 2009 we were +11 and 2010 we were -6. Defense only meltdown was the Seattle playoff game. Drew also had 22 ints which greatly affected the turnover ratio. Anyway you look at it the defense has always given up big plays and missed tackles for the last 10 years. La'Roi Glover and Joe Johnson were the last time we had a good D-line.
