He's just calling it like he sees it.

Brees, who is on the NFLPA's executive committee, said in 2011 that it wasn't the job of the players' union to compensate retired players for making poor choices with their finances once their careers ended.

This is ture !

Provided he doesn't let everyone else around him corrupt his judgement, I think Drew would make an excellent politician someday. He's right on point.

When some former player who no one has ever heard of calls out a future hall of famer, but doesn't bother to confirm or deny what that person has said about players blowing their money, well... You get the idea.

In the old days i can not agree with drew. Back when you put your degree on the shelf and played the game for less money than the degree would have paid i say the nfl owes them. they built the nfl.

Now when the salaries exploded in the 80's and 90's i have start leaning to supporting drew. If a player is making serious money and plays football he should have learned to insure himself in college. But during this time frame i have to remember the league min was well a true min. less than 100k so those players should be helped. those numbers are few because they did not last long

In todays game i say tough nuggies. the nfl is wrecking the game with rule changes that are solid to us as a safety concern were under their breath they snicker and say it bring in more money.

its not a cut and dry issue.

I don't think those of the old days have an excuse either. I don't believe they made less playing football than they would have with a normal job. But that's neither here nor there. My main problem is who says these guys HAD to pass up a degree? If you're going to college to play football, what's stopping you from getting a degree? What's stopping them from working a regular job that doesn't even require a degree? As much as I love to rag on the NFL big wigs, this issue is not their responsibility. The economy and the job market itself was far better back then than it is now. My old job isn't going to pay my bills when I'm old, so these retired players need to stop whining.

The thing is people made the decision to play football then for the compensation provided. It was a choice. I fully agree that these guys built the game we love and many are forever remembered for it. I completely agree with union funds looking after football related health issues for these former players. But beyond that I 100% agree with what Drew said. Of course it won't be popular with former players.

I can't imagine the stupidity I could generate to go to a former employer of mine and whine for money because the guys he pays now decades later make much more than I made at the time. Perhaps my early efforts helped grow his company from a small mom & pop to a billion dollar industry, but he owes me nothing. I was compensated for my efforts in a mutual agreement and that's it. When I took a buy out or pension that was the end. I think it's pathetic that someone would come back crying for more money because the economy is different now or inflation has blown modern salaries out of proportion. The gall someone would have to expect that.

As I said, health benefits I am in agreement with if related to the work they did. Other than that, each individual is and always will be responsible for their own financial position and should depend on no charity to be a security blanket.

before the big jump in salaries it was not uncommon to see players making 30k for the season and working a second job in the summer.

I remember stories of players with degrees playing for less money than the degree would bring.

Back in the day many of the players played because they loved the game. Money was not the #1 driving force it is today.

Thus the down fall in the quality of the game.
Money making is TV ratings.
TV ratings are points on the scoreboard
Changes in Defense rules protect the TV ratings
Protect the TV ratings keeps the money rolling in

Question is who is protecting the quality of the game?

In my book NO ONE.

Anyways none of this would have happened without them. are some trying to cash in? yes. There are other that should be heard

I can see your point to an extent. But I tend to believe that if you skip a degree, it's a personal choice, and if you do have a degree, use it when you're career is over. If these guys made choices that didn't allow them to make enough money, then that is their responsibility. They loved the game, and that is great. But no one forced them to do anything they didn't want to do. That's my viewpoint on it.

Lumm0x's comment above pretty much states how I see it aswell.
