Re: Spags Released
well boys and girls we talked about this any many said it would'nt happen. i personally said i'd go with paytons decision. which i knew it would keep me a winner. just playing. its great to see that payton was as pissed as us with that excuse for a defense.

Re: Spags Released
Lovie is a 4-3 guy. Not gonna happen.

Totally different skillset. Man CB's play the WR from snap till whistle. They rarely look into the backfield and shadow their man, reading his routes, positioning himself between the QB, etc A zone CB plays a lot more like a safety in that they're typically looking into the backfield and playing a specific zone. They're much more concerned about who's coming into and out of their area of the field than one specific man they're covering. Obviously there's some overlap but basically its different enough to matter. |
Re: Spags Released
wow I step out to eat dinner with the famil and SP drops dead weight.
I'm surprised but I guess Sean's thinking is he had an entire season. Guess he was watching those games and realized this wasn't working. I wonder now all that crap in the locker room about how noone liked him... is there any truth to that? |
Re: Spags Released
Shocked. I really thought he was the man for the job. His Defense did not play well at all last year. I guess it was time for him to go. Shocked !

The legend of Marshawn Lynch ( yes I renamed it ) was started on a play where Scott Shanle had the chance to stuff the play before it even started. He died to me as a Saint that day, we have been hanging on to what's left. |

I bet this is why Goodell reinstated Payton earlier than expected. Sean probably shared that he was gonna let Spags go and wanted to give him time to find another job.

Re: Spags Released
Romeo would be my top choice. He's one of those guys who is a great DC and struggles as a HC. Wade Phillips syndrome. And more so Romeo is a great person players love.

I wouldnt be suprised to see a new kind of offense, and a lot of off season work. Quote:
Smith might get lucky sometimes, but hes no match for guys like SP or BB. He simply cant play call or team manage as well. In the end the falcons will remain where they are until you get a better coach. 2nd or 3rd best in the NFCS. Smith is not built to get you farther, you picked the wrong coach is your problem, doesnt matter how much talent you hire. Smith will always mess it up. |
Re: Spags Released
ok i am shocked also. not even a a second year to improve... well that would not have been that hard

I would be AOK with Romeo as our DC.

Re: Spags Released
Another side thought, given the situation with 'the mystery player', do you think SP figured that he was losing the team as well?
It doesn't matter either way, SP was disgusted with what happened. I'm not gonna argue with the genius that is Payton. |
Re: Spags Released
Saints should have fired him weeks ago. I wanted Ray Horton! Sigh.
|
Re: Spags Released
Did he get a chance to pack before getting fired?

The basic difference, with man to man, you know who you are going to cover and you stick to him. In zone, you get 2-3 guys in your zone, and who do you cover? Think Rhonde Barber. No way in God's green Earth Barber would be able to cover man to man, but in zone, he's very smart and is able to be very effective. |
Re: Spags Released
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you.........SEAN PAYTON!
Missed you man, love it! New defense! |

Re: Spags Released
Romeo Crennel seems like a really good guy that the players like to play for. I have no idea about how good he is as a coach thou.
I think more stuff about this firing will surface in the coming days. If Spags really was disliked by the players that kinda stuff has a tendency to leak after a guy is gone. Could we see somebody come from the college ranks to fill the DC position, or a position coach from a team allready running the 3-4? |
Re: Spags Released
Jim Haslett, anyone?
ROFL I tried to keep a straight face, but I just couldn't... |

Re: Spags Released
Maybe I can finally sleep. This long waking nightmare is over.
Three schemes in two years. Maybe we should be circumspect about prospects. If our offense continues to turn the ball over and have 30% of possessions end in a1:20 3-out, the defense could lay down ied's in the red zone and not improve. If one looks at the schedule for 2013, there are 8 games with highly mobile quarterbacks. 4-3 schemes got toasted by them, though Spags defense skewed the data somewhat. This was a fairly obvious move. The surprising aspect for me is that it took this long after Payton was reinstated to make the move. Once you've had your celebratory beverage and popped John Goodman in the nuts, what else is left but doing the right thing. Who is the most successful 3-4 coach available? I mean, to be clear, when he was a DC? What was the personnel profile? How much turnover will be necessary and do we have the cap room to get in one year where we all think we should be, which is making Peytie-Pie grumbleinto the losers' locker room in February 2014? |

Re: Spags Released
Holy smokes! This is what happens when I don't stay glued to the board or sportstalk 24/7?
Bold, aggressive, decisive move by Payton and I like it. Not because I have anything against Spags, I advocated for him to get at least one season alongside Payton, but because it cuts straight to the heart and is the type of decision effective leaders make. I like the 3-4 as well. Things are starting to look up,. |
Re: Spags Released
I saw this on ESPN and my jaw hit the floor. I was not expecting it, but I love it. Payton is back, and he means business.

Re: Spags Released
The New Orleans Times-Picayune mentions Winston Moss, Ken Norton Jr., and Ed Donatell as three names to watch for the Saints' defensive-coordinator vacancy.
Moss is a former Saints assistant who is currently assistant head coach/LBs coach with the Packers. Norton Jr. is the linebackers coach with the Seahawks and has coached under Pete Carroll since 2004. Donatell, the 49ers DBs coach, has been mentioned as a front-runner for the Eagles' DC opening. Head coach Sean Payton has said he's in no hurry to name a replacement for Steve Spagnuolo, while he also said they could tap into the college ranks in their search for a new defensive boss.
