Schefter: Saints may be looking at Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel for DC

January 25, 2013:Two defensive coaching candidates the Saints will consider adding to staff include Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel, per league sources. It’s even possible the two could go together to New Orleans with one serving as defensive coordinator, sources said. When reached Friday about this possibility, Mangini said he has not been contacted by anybody from the Saints about any position. Mangini and Crennel worked on the same Patriots coaching staff that won three Super Bowls in New England. Saints have told people they plan to proceed with their defensive coordinator search slowly and there’s no rush to fill the position.

The stats don't lie, the patriots won 3 Super Bowls with crennel running the D and mangini coaching the DB's

I'd Love this move
I'm already excited that we are switching to a 3-4 on D, maybe our D will be exciting to watch again

Crennel is possible and would be awesome. I don't see the Mangenius leaving his cushy ESPN gig for any job that isn't a HC.

Sometimes, when something makes plenty of sense, it can make too much sense to happen.

In New Orleans, that may not be the case.

As Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported, former Browns and Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel is on the list to become the team’s next defensive coordinator. Though Schefter reported that former Browns and Jets coach Eric Mangini also is under consideration, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Crennel is higher on the wish list than Mangini.

Here’s why Crennel makes a lot of sense. Apart from the fact that the Patriots haven’t won a Super Bowl since Crennel left, coach Sean Payton can trust Crennel not to do the kind of stuff that Gregg Williams did.

Im starting to think we would be lucky to get him. He wasnt even on my radar before

Romeo has done absolutely nothing since leaving the pats.

Actually i think it has more to do with the offenses he's had than the D. Though KC had horrible 2 yrs with him...that was cuz of their offense the defenses have always been tough.

I think his resume would look at lot better as a HC if he had a good QB.

Yeah, but my thinking is Payton has always tried to pattern the Saints after the Patriots, and grabed some of their players. It would also make sense if he looked at their DC, when they won SB's. I can see SP being interested in Crennel, and even talking to BB about it.

I think Payton wants a "Right Now" kind of guy.
The Brees high-octane offensive window won't be open very long.
We need defense like right now. Two-three years for some up and comer
to get his defense straight may be too late. Romeo being a Belichick boy is
right up Payton's alley. He knows exactly what he's getting.
Besides that, Crennel will look pretty good too if we go real deep with him on board.
Two more Superbowls in the next four years wouldn't look bad at all.

Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

Crennell hasnt fit on the right teams, he will look intimidating working for the saints. I wouldnt mind it, I have worried a little bit about the defense in KC. They did well against ravens, saints, steelers, bengals, broncos first meeting, and sort of colts but not against falcons, bills, chargers(of all teams), bucs, raiders, panthers, browns, and broncos second meeting. But he did coach a terrible offense. In 11, the chiefs did well against chargers, raiders, broncos, pats in first quarter, steelers, bears(but not Cutler and Forte got hurt), packers. But bills, lions, colts(who started off 21-0 before choking), dolphins, jets went wild on them.

Idk I know Payton will hire the right person.

But its funny, Mangini's browns if not mistaken got two defensive touchdowns against us in 10' and two weeks later, Brady got killed. That team also gave Atlanta a tough time, bucs who went 10-6, they won in Miami in low scoring game, they fell off late because they played their division rivals, two of whom had their number, and one they played on the road. And the season before that, the broncos had struggled early, the bills didnt score but a fg, and finished their last two games on a high note and 4 game winning streak. Idk Mangini might be a better fit, but he has controverse from NE.

Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

Ed Donatell niners?

Ed Donatell is in his second season with the 49ers after being hired as the team’s secondary coach on January 19, 2011.

Working with assistant secondary coach Greg Jackson, Donatell helped guide the 49ers defensive backfield, in 2011, to 22 interceptions, which ranked second among all NFL secondaries. S Dashon Goldson and CB Carlos Rogers each recorded a career-high six interceptions and both were selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time. Rogers was named a starter in Hawaii, while also being selected Second-Team All-Pro. The defense finished the season ranked fourth in the NFL in percentage of attempts intercepted (3.9).

With over three decades of coaching experience, including 21 years in the NFL, Donatell has worked with several of the most highly regarded defensive backs in pro football history, including Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, LeRoy Butler, Darren Sharper, Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins.

Donatell most recently served as the secondary coach with the Denver Broncos from 2009-10. Over the course of two seasons with the Broncos, the team ranked seventh in the NFL in opponent completion percentage (58.8) and ninth in passing yards per game (223.7).

Prior to working as the defensive coordinator for the University of Washington in 2008 and a special assistant for the New York Jets in 2007, Donatell served as the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2004-06.

In his first season with Atlanta in 2004, the Falcons advanced to the NFC Championship Game and led the NFL in sacks (48) for the first time in club history. During his final year as the Falcons defensive coordinator in 2006, the club led the NFL in third-down percentage (30.2), while ranking sixth in the league in yards per carry allowed (3.8).

Donatell spent four seasons as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator (2000-03), helping the Packers lead the NFL with 116 takeaways from 2001 to 2003. Green Bay advanced to the playoffs during each of those three seasons, including the 2001 and 2002 campaigns when they won the NFC North title. In 2002, Donatell’s defense set a Green Bay record with 52 sacks and led the NFL with 45 takeaways. That year, Sharper earned his second Pro Bowl selection under Donatell after tying for the NFC lead among safeties with seven interceptions.

In Donatell’s first stint with the Broncos (1995-99) he served as the team’s secondary coach and won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1998 an 1999. The Broncos ranked seventh in the league in both passing yards per game (199.6) and passing yards per attempt allowed (6.5), en route to earning three playoff berths under Donatell. The Broncos also ranked in the top 10 against the pass in four of Donatell’s five seasons as defensive backs coach.

Donatell made his NFL coaching debut as the secondary coach with the New York Jets from 1990-94, where he worked with Lott in the final two seasons of his career.

Prior to making the jump to the NFL, Donatell spent 11 seasons in the collegiate ranks. He served as the defensive backs coach at Cal State Fullerton (1989), the University of Idaho (1986-88) and the University of Pacific (1983-85). He also was a graduate assistant at the University of Washington (1981-82) and Kent State (1979-80).

An all-conference defensive back, team captain and four-year letterwinner at Glenville State (WV) University, Donatell received a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1979. He went on to earn a master’s degree in administration from Kent State in 1981. A native of Stow, OH, Donatell is married to his wife Shari, and the couple has three children, Brenna, Thomas and Steven.

The New Orleans Saints are interested in former Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel as a candidate to replace fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday and later confirmed by ProFootballTalk.

Crennel has not had much success as a head coach, but he's repeatedly proven himself an elite coordinator. He won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and his work with the Chiefs' defense earned him a promotion when Todd Haley was fired in 2011.

Eric Mangini is also reportedly up for the job, but a source told PFT that Crennel is the preferred choice.

Saints coach Sean Payton needs someone to get the defense back on track after a horrid effort in 2012 resulted in the No. 31 ranked scoring defense and No. 32 total defense. Crennel fits in nicely and, being one of the most well-respected men in the NFL, would be a strong addition from a public relations standpoint in the post-Bounty scandal era.

Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

Mike Singletary's most famous coaching moment came during a postgame tirade after an incident with tight end Vernon Davis. He doesn't want that to be the signature moment of his coaching career.

The San Francisco 49ers fired Singletary two years ago and replaced him with Jim Harbaugh, who led the team to the NFC Championship in 2011 and then to Super Bowl XLVII this season. Singletary was one of 14 interviewed this month for the Bears opening. Quarterback guru Marc Trestman was hired, however, as the Bears wanted an offensive mind to replace the defensive Lovie Smith.

"It's hard to put into words," Singletary recently told the Chicago Sun-Times. "You play at a place, and you remember what it was like and what it took to get where you needed to go. To sit up there and talk about that job was unlike anything I've ever experienced."

The Rooney Rule has been the topic of discussion after all 15 coaching and general manager jobs open this offseason were filled by white men. Singletary doesn't want to be the next in the line African-American coaches who didn't get a second-chance at a top NFL job, but he isn't upset with the process.

"I just believe there are a lot of guys out there that are worthy," Singletary said about minority candidates. "But there are also some white coaches out there who are worthy who don't get interviews. So it goes both ways."

Singletary coached linebackers for the Minnesota Vikings the past two seasons and will continue to patiently wait for another opportunity that so many "retreads" normally get.

Thanks for keeping me objective. I grew up not too far from Cleveland Stadium and have always had a soft spot for the Browns. What comes to mind with him are some amazingly horrendous personnel decisions that Holmgren could be credited with, many unbelieveably stupid play calls on offense, not much love between him and his players and that he had Rob Ryan as his DC. Oh yes and his nickname from there, Mangina. I'm just not feeling it

It's the whole Parcell's tree of coaching connection via Bill Belichick.

Mangini was the DB coach in New England when Crennel was the DC and Belichick the HC when they won three Super Bowl titles, so they have a shared history.

Mangini didn't do himself any favors with the stints he had with the Jets and the Browns, so maybe this would be a nice stepping stone for him to get back into the game and have very little risk as the spotlight would be on Crennel.
